We have major oil leakage in the engine bay of our Laguna 1.9 turbo diesel. I checked the turbo and that’s in good nick. I removed the breather pipe to check how much oil it was spitting out and it was pouring white smoke at a fairly high pressure (if you hold your finger over it long enough it’ll force it off). Is this dreaded blow by suggesting the oil control rings are buggered or is it fairly normal? We have blue smoke out the tailpipe on occasion too.
Car is a 2006 Laguna 2 1.9 dci with 92k miles.

White smoke sounds like water.

No coolant consumption at all and it gets run up to temperature every day so very unlikely to be condensation.

White smoke on a diesel is apparently unburnt diesel, from what I’ve read, if it’s not water.

Sounds like rings. I'd do a compression test. Bet you find that a cylinder won't hold pressure.

Yeah I’ve heard that too. So white smoke through the breather might be unburnt diesel blown past the piston rings... uh oh.

Yeah this is what I’m afraid of, that it’s blow by. Better get hold of a compression tester...

Yeah, bit more tricky on a diesel. Good luck!

Yeah might have to see if someone already owns one I can borrow because they’re pretty pricey.

Yeah, doesn’t sound good. Hopefully there’s another explanation, though. I know nothing about diesels that’s actually from practical experience, so there’s a very good chance I’m wrong.
I was actually thinking about buying a Laguna like that one fairly soon - same kind of age and milage - because they seem like such bargains. Might have to rethink that one.

They are known to have some engine/turbo issues (although that might just be typical internet overreaction) but they’re lovely cars when they’re running right. Unfortunately ours runs like shit at the moment.
