Say I had a corvette rolling chassis like the one pictured. How hard would it be to extend the torque tube 3.7 inches to a total wheelbase of 108.2”. As well as everything else necessary to extend it to that wheelbase?

It was likely in a wreck so a tire was probably trashed.

I alwasy seem to forget Corvettes have rear mounted gearboxes... And rear leaf springs too!

You wanna shove this under the Trans AM don’t you.

Very. And not to mention all of the body modifications necessary to get it to work under your firebird with the transaxle and such.

Yeah.... the economics work out about the same to buy a crashed corvette as it is to do the engine/trans and suspension upgrades I want to do.

I think you and I both know what that answer is.

I don’t really know what the problems would be. Take out the stock gas tank obviously and probably install a fuel cell in what would be left of the trunk. The biggest problem I could see would be the trans tunnel fitting the torque tube. the width of the corvette is only .25” larger than the T/A. Electronics would be interesting, but probably not much worse than the T56/LS swap I want to do.

You don’t. Build new engine mounts and put the engine wherever it needs to go in order to make the rear wheels fit in the wheelwells properly.

Or you could just pull the engine, find a trans to work with it, and just drop the engine/trans in and fabricate the necessary mounts without hacking up the entire car.

But then how do the front wheels line up in the fenders then? They’d be off set three inches back from center.

Edit, I get it. Move the engine in the chassis. In my mind I was keeping the unit together.

I’ve seen it done, once. Under a heavily custom 60s suburban, and it wasn’t finished either. I think the biggest question here is why? From my understanding the transaxle is the weaker link in the driveline.

Stretch it an additional 5.5” and put it under the Explorer?

Try cutting up the floor as it is not designed for a transaxle. Nor was the chassis designed for transverse leaf springs or the A arm front suspension.

Just get a 4-link kit and a bolt on front suspension. Then whatever drivetrain that you want, like a 351C and a 9” rear with a toploader in between

I have no idea about these things. But is there a drive shaft in the Torque tube?

Do the wrong thing. A trans-vette must be made.

Eh, I’d probably stick with the LS/T56 combo out of a 4th gen Camaro then.

I put the “build mounts, move engine” part in reverse order, my bad. But yeah, you would start at the transaxle and work forward, with the engine being the last thing mounted, and wherever it needs to go you would build mounts to make it live happy there. You might need to massage the firewall a bit/bunch, and possibly need to play with the trans tunnel, and possibly have to redo the trunk floor and rear cabin area to make the transaxle clear everything, but it’s doable.

almost the entire front drive system wont work at all the ac compressor and alternator sit to low for the cross member, neither would the oil pan, you could adapt the a arms and such to work but you would still need to keep the f body subframe. you would have to cut the entire tunnel out I would think and most of the trunk to make it fit, would probably have mini tubs so you could offset the wheels back in. The only car I’ve ever seen where they actually used the complete setup like that was in a 63 Impala.

Rear alignment looks off. Mismatched tires are a red flag. The bodywork seems to have little attention paid to it.

More or less yeah. The driveshaft connects directly to the crankshaft and always rotates at engine speed. The clutch is at the back with the transmission.
