Here is another cool video that I stumbled on. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was constructed around 100 years ago with lifts to bring horse & carriages down to the tunnel. The lifts are still in use, but now cars can use the tunnel.
To keep the tunnel dry while under construction they sealed and pressurized it. This worked to keep the tunnel from flooding, but resulted in 3 fatalities and many cases of varying severity’s of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . At that time the effects of pressure on the human body weren’t understood, and people didn’t know you needed to slowly depressurize to avoid problems.

I don’t think that’s quite right. Caisson sickness had been known for decades by then, and it was fairly well understood by that point.
