Oppo I may or may not be in a position within a year to be able to sustain a $1,000 car payment. It’s just me a guy with a girlfriend in college who lives out of state, I have no one to drive around, cargo space doesn’t really matter, neither does MPG. Looking for $1,100 tops after taxes, registration, and the car purchase price. $10,000 down payment, maybe $15,000. Also I live in California so trading in your car doesn’t give you a tax break like most states do. I was looking at a GT350(not R), Z06, or regular mustang GT to save up to purchase a 911 GTS or GT3. What awesome cars am I missing oppo?

Edit: car will also be my only vehicle so reliability is at least semi important.

GT350. Be unique. It’s the mark of the connoisseur, rather than another one of the middle-aged trying to recapture some lost element of their youths as in the corvette. Plus, resale value.

Spend $400 and invest the other $600. I know, “get the fuck outta here”.

Not exactly the bruisers you have up there but you could can an M235i easily within your budget.

Alternatively, lower spec’d M3.

Lexus RC F.

Legendary Lexus/Toyota reliability, sexy muscular coupe body, RWD, intoxicating N/A Yamaha V8.

Also consider this: if you hate the looks, you’ll be spending most of your time inside of it, not looking at the grille.

Genesis 5.0R is a decent option. Fairly sporty, well equipped, quite reliable, etc.

You can pick one up used for quite a bit less than new. In fact, I always recommend buying off lease/fleet. Still under warranty usually too!

Test drive EVERYTHING you're even remotely interested before making a decision. At least one will make you fall in love. Try out an E9x M3 along the way, too (I'm biased).

My next car is one of these in a similar price range - Rs5, Audi R8, Gen5 Viper, Jag F-type, Aston Martin anything, Porsche Turbo. It really depends on what you are looking for in a car. The choices you listed won’t make you stand out, which may be exactly what you want. I like standing out so I factor in a wow point to my cars, also they should be blue.

If I had a garage I’d get another gen3 Viper and a dedicated 20-25k track car because racing will drain bank accounts faster than anything else, but will also be more fun than any of your other choices.

~$20/month/$1,000 financed X $1,000/month = ~$50,000 + $10,000 down = ~ $60,000 if I’m not mistaken. In that price range, I’m personally looking at a loaded F-150 but you’re not me. If I were in your situation I’d look at a either a Corvette or an M235i. Corvette if you want all-out performance, Bimmer if you want performance but also a little more comfort.

I don’t know much about car payments, but i know that if you buy a 65000$ sports car while still being young enough to be in college, your loan company will force you to get a complete insurance that will most likely cost you a few extra hundredth per month.

So you have to pay 1100$ per month, then you have to add like 300-400$ per month just for the insurance... I think when you factor everything your car, depending on where you live, can easily end up costing you about 2000$ per month.

If you can afford it though, go for it. Corvette are nice and fun :)

Unique? Mustang? Are.. you serious? One of the most popular sports cars in America does not equal “uniqeu” or “connoisseur” it screams “I’m a high schooler with too much money”. Sure, Corvette screams “midlife crisis” but at least there’s some amount of maturity to it, and the C7 Z06 is a genuine world-class sports car.

GT350 is unique. Very limited production fir the first year, and slightly less-limited afterwards. It’s the ZR1 of the Mustang line unless/until the GT500 comes along.

Even if it’s a special edition it’s still indistinguishable to Average Joe from your neighbor’s daughter’s base model. Sure, us car guys will notice the special wheels/wing/fog lights/whatever appearance parts go with the go-fast bits under the hood, but it doesn’t stand out in a crowd. At all. And this is the big failing I have with the Mustang in general. It’s not a bad car by any means, it’s fucking excellent, but it just isn’t special.

Not that a Corvette is some exotic, but it has that classic low-slung impractical proportioned appearance that many exotics do have. Acres of hood, a low smooth greenhouse. “Hello, look at me. I’m purpose built to go fast.”

Well, look. If you really want to go balls deep, then go for a (non GT) 911. It continues to be the only supercar you can DD, and its easily the most reliable and least temperamental. New 911s have a nice bonus feature too: they don’t try to kill you in corners anymore.

If you see any kind of snow or lots of rain I’d go for the Carrera 4S. If not, get the Turbo. Or hell, get the vanilla version and bank the difference.

While the corvette does have those proportions, the new Mustang has them too, though granted not to the same degree. Coupes by themselves are already getting so rare - actual coupes, not that “4-door coupe” baloney the Germans are so set upon, but I’ll make an exception for the Mazda RX-8, which does a sneaky Jo of hiding its two rear doors - that they’re visually distinct as different and special, and even impractical with two large doors where most vehicles have four regular-size doors. “Average Joe” may not be able to tell much of a visual difference between a base Mustang and a GT350, but they’d also be hard-pressed to distinguish a Stingray from a Z06/Z07, or an RS from a ZL1, a Carrera from a Turbo S, an SE from an SRT, and even enthusiasts mix up the fronts of the current corvette and vipers at a distance. Does that make the higher-tier cars less unique or special, especially to enthusiasts and collectors? Does that make them less valuable to the people buying them, who do know what they’re getting? Should someone of the means pass on getting a Bugatti Veyron because it looks like an Audi R8, or a McLaren P1 because it resembles a 650S?

Looks aren’t everything, and having driven the full range of available corvettes and Mustangs (and essentially everything both compete against, except a GT-R), and knowing what Ford is capable of from driving the GT500, Boss 302 (though not a Laguna Seca), and the vaunted (and doubled-in-value) Ford GT, and hearing trusted reviewers' perceptions on the GT350, I'd get the GT350. Period.

You mean ~$1000/mo? I would lease a Cayman S or F-Type S Coupe. Or buy them used/CPO - you could even find a 2014 Type R, if you’re interested in convertibles.

I actually was gonna do that. Then the gubmint didn’t select my visa application in a lottery and now I have to leave the country :(

You seem to be doing great financially for a young guy, why spend it all? Lease a sports car for 2 years, cash in the on the free maintenance and hassle free experience. In 2 years when your tastes have shifted (they will), upgrade to something else.

Do you have a garage as well, that would definitely factor in on me owning vs leasing a nice car. Best of luck!
