I’ve posted before about how my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and how I’m trying to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Well, last night we had a major breakthrough.
Summer is coming in Australia, and it’s finally gotten to that sweet spot where the weather is always fairly warm, and you can wear shorts and a t-shirt at most times of most days. You can also wrench on your car in the dead of night! Last night we attempted to install the new timing belt, having finally extracted a snapped bolt from the block.
Snapped bolts: every man’s nightmare
In my last post I got some comments from people far more knowledgable than myself telling me that the cam angle sensor has nothing to do with compression, and they’re right. My problem was nothing to do with compression. But it was the sensor that was at fault - it looks like a dodgy sensor was stopping me from starting and it’s as simple as that.
Anyway, having completed the timing belt swap we decided that there was nothing stopping us from seeing if she’ll finally start, though we’d have to use the old sensor. So we did, and with some fiddling, it started for the first time in months.
Here’s a crappy video for those who really want to see the magic moment.
The elation was real.

Awesome! Cheers! That car and you deserve a victory hoon once it’s sorted.

Yeah I’ll be taking it out in the wet for some fun, don’t worry. Just sitting in it, it’s so different to the MR2 in so many ways.

Hm, that sensor’s got me thinking...
If your engine has variable valve timing, then a crank position sensor could very well have an influence on compression, as well as ignition timing.
EDIT: Wikipedia tells me that your car does indeed have a form of variable valve timing called NVTCS... How about that...
Anyway, great to see it running!

Not quite the same is it.
Thanks :) It is great.
