3.5-5.6, the 6.3 version is a bit cheaper and smaller, the 3.5-5.6 is the big daddy

nice. the only problem i have with lenses with that wide of zoom range, is that they usualy aren’t very fast. it’s a tradeoff between convience and speed.

I have a simlar Tamron lens, 18-270, f/ 3.5-6.3. It’s a good travel/walkaround lens, but I started coming hard up against that 6.3. It’s simply not fast enough for what I was needing it to do. And since purchasing a 70-200 f/2.8, I can see a significant quality difference.

Very true, but that's how it works. I'm really smitten with the lens, the variety of shots I can get with it are incredible. Sure, for the lowest light it lacks a bit of speed, but 5.6 is a good jump from 6.3 anyways. It's a fantastic all in one lens, the biggest problem is that it's massive, especially with the zoom extended.

Mine was a Christmas present from my wife, probably because she was sick of me talking about wanting one all the time. The Tamron is excellent, and Sigma makes one that is even a bit cheaper (all things being relative). You might be able to score one used.

i just checked amazon, the nikon 80-200 is about 1300 new. as much as i reaalllyy want one, that’s one mortgage and car payment wrapped up in one lens.

Oh, I know. It’s hard to spend that kind of bread on a hobby, especially since I don’t make any money at it.

KEH has one for as low as $822. B&H has one for as low as $700. However, it looks like none have image stabilization, and that really helps.
