who managed to get a DUI. (No, it isn’t me) Anyway, they’ve done all of the work to get it cleared up, license reinstated and unrestricted etc... and their insurance is set to renew...at almost triple what it was. Anyone know of an insurance company that won’t rape them over this? Steve Lehto? Advice

I’d bet it’s unlikely. This is how risk adjustments work.

I got a DUI in Arizona about 4 years ago. State Farm dropped me before I even went to court or got convicted.
Went with Progressive. I’m currently paying ~$86/mo for my FR-S. His issue is probably that he had to file an SR22 form, which makes insurance astronomically more expensive despite provider. I had a family friend who knew how the court system worked and told me how to proceed so as to avoid having to file for SR22. He’s likely going to have very high rates regardless of provider, but some will be cheaper than others. Just shop around.

Caught driving drunk and wants to complain about the cost of insurance?

That's in the ballpark for a 20yo male with a perfect record, a low insurance bracket vehicle, and only basic coverage here... screw you ontario
If they already went to a new company (eg current company refused insurance because of the DUI), I doubt you’ll find better. If they are still with the same company, they should be able to do better by finding a new one. Not sure about US companies, but if it’s anything like Canada, avoid brokers, you’ll always get a better rate from direct insurance.
I would consider switching cars, too.

Give him this advice: “suck it up princess.”
At least he doesn’t have to take the bus. Insurance companies know this and they’re going to charge for it.

Nah, they’re old like me. Perfect recoord(at least that is what he said) up until then.

Yeah. I think they had to do the sr-22 just to get their restricted license back. Not much of a choice about it in CA.

I think your friend might as well buy some of this, lube up and get used to bending over... LOL

The only way he WON’T get raped on the insurance is if he switches his mode of transportation to one of these:

To most the law seems that way in Arizona too, but apparently if you voluntarily accept the license restriction before they mandate it you go for the 90 suspension (30 days suspended and 60 restricted) and don’t have to file SR-22.

Hmmmmm so they have the same car as you and are the same age as you but are not you....
Joking, hope your friend finds cheaper insurance!

I feel so, so sorry for him. That must be rough having to pay more after exposing himself as irresponsible and likely to drive drunk.

Not sure about how others do it, but most of my friends are around the same age and demographics as me...maybe I’m just a weirdo. (also, I drive a Fiat, the Mazda is our second car)

The “finger wagging” responses...
I know a few people with DUI’s and it really depends on the State, but more so on the circumstances of the arrest. I know one guy that is paying double what he used to for insurance, and another who’s insurance company never found out about his. I take it from your post that his current provider already knows about it, so hes probably stuck with whatever he can get, as any new provider will check his record.

They can wag all they want, it wasn’t me, so I don’t care. Anyway, I think you are right about that. I’m trying to dig a little deeper for info. I know that he contested the charges, but it didn’t get him very far. It seems to be one of those things that, if accused, is almost impossible to disprove.

I gotcha, I just make the above face when I see those sorts of comments...so petty. “Thanks Dad...”
People love to find a snide way to say “haha look at this person getting what I think they deserve”, until they’re the ones getting what they deserve.

Is there something you find offensive about my disapproval of driving drunk? Why shouldn’t I disapprove, this isn’t like a “its my right to...” or “so what if smoking kills I like it.” Kinda thing. There is NO excuse for driving drunk and as car people we need to the strongest supporters of this, to preserve our rights as motorists. “You’re not the boss of me!” to which I say - Welcome to the world! Here is your boss; consequences.

Drunk driving. So petty. Such a trifle. Those mean insurance companies taking advantage of these poor, sweet, drunk drivers.

That’s just the name of the game in insurance. If they know anything - they WILL use it.

No, but there is something offensive about making unnecessary remarks when a guy was just looking for some advice. Obviously driving drunk is wrong, so is street racing, public hooning etc... They are all dangerous and when the outcome is tragic, the people most affected are often innocent bystanders.
My comment was not meant to defend drunk driving or any other dangerous habit. It was meant for the people who just can’t resist saying something like “haha look at this rich asshole with his Ferrari on fire. That’s what you get for being a rich d bag!” Without having any idea what actually happened.
Same thing here, you don’t know this guys friend, you don’t know what happened. Even if you did, none of it matters because he was just asking for advice. You’re entitled to your right to disapprove, but why broadcast it? Any reasonable person shares your opinion including the person who posted originally.

Drunk driving is serious, finger wagging is petty
![]() 10/07/2015 at 15:39 |

Here is the thing, no excuses means no excuses. Ferrari on fire? Manufacture defect, not his fault - excuse. Its totally fair game for me to shame an inexcusable behavior, I don’t care about his friends behavior or social situation, they are not excuses for driving drunk. People who put me and my family in danger for selfish reasons deserve to be shamed. Same goes for street racing, public hooning, etc.
My advice to people looking for ways to reduce the sting of the consequences of their actions will always be: Don’t do that thing anymore.

You said it’s “cleared up” - if this shows up on a driver’s abstract, it’s a chargeable offense and he better lube up as other comments have suggested.
In Ontario, the only way it can’t be charged for is if it’s thrown out completely - i.e. a judge deems the charge to be invalid and no fines are paid at all by the defendant (I think that’s the word for whoever got ticketed, I’m no fancy law-man). A ticket like this here would mean that you’re pretty much immediately limited to high-risk companies, and high-risk comes at a high-price.
It sucks, but consider it a hard lesson for your friend - all he can really do at this point is call around to see if the insurance company will even bother to give him a price, let alone one lower than $350/month as you mentioned in another reply.
