Last night I watched !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and it made me want to go find one to review. More than that, I want to compare the original 240Z to the modern FR-S/BRZ.

I know, I know, the inspiration for the Toyobaru was the Toyota AE86 platform. But look at a 240Z, compare it to a modern 86, and there’s a lot of resemblance. The appearance is similar, and both cars were designed to be fun affordable sport coupes for their times. The Z got bigger, heavier, and more luxurious over time, but the original 240Z stayed true to this formula.

A friend of mine has an ugly 240Z with a 280ZX turbo motor. I drove it at an autocross or two a while back and it was awesome, but unfortunately it hasn’t been running for several years now. It’s a long shot, but if anyone knows someone who knows someone in southern New England who might be willing to help me do a side-by-side comparison of a 240Z and my BRZ, please let me know. Thanks!

I don’t know of anyone but I’ll keep my ear to the ground. Drove a 280z a couple years ago and I loved it...I want one.

Related tangent: Apparently my dad had a 240z when my parents lived in California. He found out he would be a father and came home in a blue Ford Taurus. My mom looked at him and said “what the hell is that?”

“It’s our family car!”

“So you’re going to drive that?”

“I thought you could and I’ll drive the Cougar.”

“The Cougar is mine...you can drive that thing.”

I vaguely remember that Taurus so it survived long enough...but my mom never forgave him for trading the Z. She was pissed.

I was upset when I learned what a 240z was.

Well I have a 240 and its hard enough to find them in good shape in CA! Boston might be interesting... I was lucky and found mine in a big shed and I still had to do some rust repair, not too bad, but pretty much every Z needs the dog legs replaced and you might as well weld in a nice plate on the frame behind it while you’re there, it’s a weak spot.

This side above wasn’t too bad but we welded both sides up with plates and coated everything. With an upgraded motor you could probably break a car there. You can’t even see surface rust on many but in that cavern behind it they are rusting because there wasn’t any drainage. Now we leave the whole area treated and have weep holes. I can go on and on about these cars, the early ones are much lighter but I prefer to keep the lighter original engine in them and triple carb them, mine has the original engine rebuilt so I can’t split them up. An early 260 is not much heavier and I don’t mind those getting swaps.
