One of these goofy little French cars stopped at my shop today. Looked identical to this one; wheels, graphics, and all. No SR20 because my jaw dropped so fast and hard it sent my phone flying. Owner got on it pretty good when he left, sounded insane for what it is.

Oh, the wants are out of control! Love me some R5 Turbo. There's a red one around here too.

That car is so perverse when you consider what it started out as which makes it amazing!

I’ve seen one of these in person. A Turbo II, specifically.
Goofy indeed, though the one I saw a couple years ago couldn’t escape my camera. I saw a black one, but red works well on it.
Makes me wonder a little. 20 odd years from now, what cars will make us give the same reaction? There aren’t really many goofy overpowered and undersized cars on the market today like there used to be.

one of the best examples of “coming out of one’s shell” - Le Car - junk, R5 - freakin’ awesome

Well there’s this.
It is infinitely sad we can’t get the Up Exclamation Mark in the US.

I would give quite a few dollars to have an Up Exclamation Mark.
The VAG has no idea what it’s missing....pull the diesels and give us these!
To be honest I had forgotten about the Up Exclamation Mark....we need more interesting DD practical cars here...

Yes we do. And the thing is, people say they’re no fun to drive because they have the horsepower of a leaf blower, but that just means that you can floor it from every stop sign and be constantly on the edge and have your bicycle-spec tires squealing around every manhole cover. Not to mention that you only have to fill up with gas once a year.

Agreed! I’ve never seen one in person before, but I love it!

For sure. Nobody else in my shop knew what it was, until I explained it to them. Then they said things like “badass” and “bitchi’”. Couldn’t agree more.

A Turbo 2 would be cool as well. I wouldn’t kick either one out of the garage, color wouldn’t matter. Hmm, how about a 1 in red and a 2 in black with the red-accented wheels...
I don’t know, there isn’t anything nearly as bastardized as these straight from the factory. Closest I can think of would be Fiat Abarth or A/CLA/GLA45 or the new FoRS when that comes out. Maybe Golf R. The hot hatch segment is pretty hot right now.

My parents had one when my dad was stationed in Germany and I was a newborn. The $$-DM exchange rate was fantastic in the mid/late 80s and they bought it new. For back then (85/86/87) it was ridiculously fast, and was the first car my parents owned that could gain speed up a long hill.
It was also so. extremely. unreliable. A true Renault - the biggest issue was having two separate fuel pumps and the glue that held them in place was easily corroded by fuel. They said it spent more time being towed behind a VW van (and sometimes a Beetle) to the Renault dealer for repairs.
They sold it for a Mitsubishi Space Wagob and there has been a minivan (among other cars) in my parent’s driveway for the last 25+ years

I’m full of jealousy right now. You probably don’t really remember it but that I’d still super cool.
I remember how amazing it was to drive up hill and gain speed, that was crazy. Up until then I just assumed it was normal to get a running start 5-10mph over the limit and still lose half your speed by the time you made it up.

They said it was a balls to the wall car. To quote my dad, when it ran it ran “like a scolded dog.”
It was so fast, the trip from my parents house to my mom’s parent’s house (mom’s German) was about 6 hours but my mom did it so fast in the Renault that she would wait 3 hours before calling my dad to say she made it.
I love the way those 80/90s hopped up versions of basic cars (R5 GT Turbo, GTI, Peugeot 205GTI, etc) looked
