Today was spent working on the shitbox mk2 Prelude we want to use for the carbagerun rally. The car ‘ran when parked’. In 2008. We couldn’t get it to start today though.

We started out rebuilding the front brakes. After finishing we started looking at the engine.

After checking fuel lines and manually cranking the engine we put some fresh gasoline in the tank and hooked up a fresh battery. The starter worked fine, but the car wouldn’t start. At all. Nothing happened at all. We checked if it got a spark, which it did. As it was getting dark we didn’t have time have time to check the fuel delivery.

Any suggestions on what we can do? I’m new at this. We do have another spare Prelude, which was also ‘ran when parked’ in 2008.

Get some starter fluid and spray it into the air intake. If it sputters or even runs for a second or two, you can be 100% sure that it’s a fuel issue. It won’t fix anything but it’s a cheap and easy way to make sure you are on the right path.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood, but by checking the fuel lines, you actually have fuel flowing or that there just aren't leaks.

We checked for obvious leaks, to be safe. Nothing else.

Was the pump working?

I agree with this concept, but it might not be the best idea to hit an engine that hasn’t run in over 5 years with starter fluid. That stuff requires very little compression to combust, and it is possible that it might detonate, causing damage to your old crusty rings and gaskets. Maybe try gas in a spray bottle, or even carb cleaner would be less likely to cause damage.

By the way, my guess is fuel pump!

Didn’t know that, thanks! Well, to be honest I wouldn’t even cold start an engine that hasn’t been running for this long. Oil change, compression test, and then cranking it over without ignition to make sure the oil gets to where it is needed and to build up pressure, before actually firing it up. But he isn’t restoring an old Porsche or something to original specs, for this Carbage Run it needs to pass inspection once and then run for about a fortnight.

This sort of thing could have any number of causes, but I did recently experience exactly the same symptoms on my car, and it turned out to be the crank sensor.
