I have always loved Volvo. Considering a 2008 or hopefully newer s80. Love the interior, the seats. Would steer away from the T6 and most likely the v8, which would leave me with the 3.2 six. Any thoughts? They seem to be pretty reliable in volvo forums and sweedspeed but curious what Oppo thinks. I have heard of some issues with oil consumption, mini or ac naggy issues and some coolant concerns. Isn't there a volvo expert here who actually works in a volvo dealership as a mechanic? Would love your two cents if you see this! Many many thanks!

I had a 2005 S80, which is the previous generation model, with the 2.5T I5, which I don’t think was offered on the second generation model, but it was a fantastic car, very smooth, built like a tank. I imagine the 2nd gen is even better.

Drove an early one - they’re very comfortable. I would do a bit of research into maintenance costs however - friend of mine worked at a dealership a long time ago, and some Volvo parts were more expensive than equivalent Rolls parts.

I’ve got a 2008 C30 (so not the same engine but same year)

Car is super reliable mechanically so far. I just have a bunch of dumb little things that are going wrong (lights burning out, weird power windows, broken windshield washers, and a broken seat latch..but I got a 3 year warranty on it and just have to go to the dealer

The 3.2 is a good engine. It was common and used in a lot of other Volvos which helps. I love the S80 its just too big for me

VOLVO!

Things off the top of my head on those is.... umm... Welp, just regular wear items for the most part. Breaks, tires, maintenance. A/C compressors go out every now and then. They about $800 each so those could get pricey. Oil consumption 3.2 engines we’ve seen here. No common at all though. 1, possibly 2 a year maybe. The mechanical brake pumps leak a bit sort of but they make service kits for those now. We got a couple cars in last month for ignition modules. The only ones this year, odd they came in within the same time. Besides that, not too many things with these. The one you get might not see any of these issues. It could also see all of these lol. There is not way to tell. I like them a lot and am currently in the marker for a good 08-2010 S80 (low mile, grandma edition) :]

Hey- thanks for the info! Would you shy away from one with 60,000+ miles from a 2010? Do you think it has long term reliability? Have you seen them with 200k miles? I just love the interior, the seats are amazing. The doors shut with such authority, too. That v8 is incredible, but I don't want to suffer mpg. Do you think I should buy at a volvo dealer? Does it need to be services by volvo? Premium fuel or no?

I’d jump on a 2010 with 60K for sure. The most miles i’ve seen come in here on one is like 180K but i’m sure most people out of warranty don’t come to the dealer for service so there are bound to be more out there with higher miles. I wouldn’t go for the V8 because the active Four-C shocks are very expensive. The AWD unit on the V8’s can develop issues and they are not cheap. The 3.2 gets good MPG for the size of the car and engine but it ain’t no Corolla lol. If you can afford a CPO S80 go for it but me personally, I wouldn’t deter from getting one out of warranty, especially if it’s super clean. If an engine issue does occur (random pulley, oil seal, water pump, etc) expect the labor to be high for 2 reasons. 1, because the way the 3.2 engine accessories are placed, is sort of bonkers and positioned very bad. 2, to be sure it’s done right, i’d recommend taking it to at the very least, a independent shop that specialized on Volvo. That’s only “if” something were to happen. Everything non engine is ultra easy to do. Just give it a good look over like one would do on any car. And yes, the interior is sooo rad. Plus, that second gen S80 is still among the most safest cars on the road. Regular fuel is good for those. The T6 (which is a total sleeper) does take a minimum of 91 octane.

Awesome! Any idea why volvo made it unusually difficult to get to things? Just to be different and unique?

Any electronic issues or concerns with interior quality? Upkeep?

Fitment more than anything. This engine is used in Land Rover LR2

They are all different. Some have them, some don’t. Take care of the interior and she’ll be fine. Electrical issues are random and I can’t think of any “common” things. Cars come in with them, but all are random. Again, some don’t see any electrical issues at all also.

Should I be concerned? Wasn't the LR2 one of the worst cars ever made?

Nope. think of it like the Lotus Evora. Pretty much the worst quality car ever.... but that Toyota powertrain is ultra solid :]
