I’m done with being concerned about my paint. My LF fender already needed to be repainted because of a cancer spot in the clear coat. Out of nowhere my hood has a taint load of spots ready to bubble through on both sides. A lot of the corners on other panels have the finish starting to come off. And while the previous owners of my car took great mechanical care of her, they did an terrible job washing her. The paint is riddled with swirl marks.

Oh come on now! swirls can be fixed or mitigated easily with the help of some polish and some handiwork or buffing! :)

Which car?
The Car Guys gave a good piece of advice a few years back. If you’re keeping the car, get a few estimates on what it will take to get the car into perfect mechanical and cosmetic shape. If it’s 2 grand, you might want to get the work done. If it’s 8 grand, you have a choice to make.

The car really just needs a new paint job at this point. With what knowledge of paint repair that I have, I don’t think polish and buffing will work.

Sounds like you need to learn the lost art of Home Automotive Refinishing.

The NA. The Benz needs a new paint job as well, but it doesn’t belong to me any more so its not my problem haha. The car isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I don’t ever intend on parting with it. On a college budget I don’t have the funds for 8 or 2 grand.

I think certain parts are too far gone for that.

Or, you could do what a buddy of mine did - learn to do body work. He got a part time job at a body shop, learned the craft, and they eventually walked him through fixing his rocker panels. And you’d have a skill, for when the zombie apocalypse comes.

I’ve thought about doing something like that before but with school and the other stuff I have going on, it can’t happen.

My W123 has three small leaks, one is fine, but with the other two it becomes pretty large and drools when its warmed up and running. So.... I am working on that now. The A/C is hot too, the whole A/C system is two years new, I think the stuff leaked but I have to check that too.

Eh, there are small steps you can take to slow the rust - google it. And if it’s done later rather than sooner, it won’t be so bad.

Its not rusting. The body is fine but the clear coat seems intent on falling off.

Eh, then just drive it. You can get it stripped and repainted when you get flush.

Part of me wants to replace the fender with a junk yard piece, paint it with chalkboard paint, and draw my universities name/logo on it.

You are a college student - you can do that without fear. I am a middle-aged guy - I’d get laughed at. Just keep the car safe.

Dude, just repaint the whole car yourself. Replace any panels that are rusty then sand and spray. Miatas are so small and curvy that resplaying one should be very easy. Even if you mess up it won’t be very noticeble due to all the curves.
I repainted my big ass 85’ Grand Marquis in my garage which is all square and has flat panels all over. I painted it black which is the easiest color to fuck up and it still came out half decent.

Yeah I wouldn’t put anything stupid/gross on it.

There’s no rust on the car. And I don’t have the means to repaint the car myself.

I mean a bit more - if the car needs safety equipment repaired, replaced, just do it. You want to live to go to graduate school. Not law school - don’t make the same mistake I did.
