Well, there's two things actually: A genuine Hella Xenon headlight unit for the 528i is $800 for just ONE, and for some reason the left side is $70 more than the right side.
I mean, I checked eBay and Rockauto, and they had it for ~$600 each, but that's still insane.

More people smash up the driver's side? Also, $800 for an old stock xenon projector unit isn't crazy. But, it IS the reason why so many folks go the retrofit route.

I don't want it, I was just browsing and happened upon it, but it disgusts me that people would charge (or pay) a significant fraction of what their vehicle is worth for something like that.

I was gonna make a "Hella Expensive" joke here, but Sweden beat me to it. So, instead, serious hat:
The way I see it, if you are looking for a NOS replacement part, then you are paying warehouse storage fees for that box on the shelf for, at minimum, 12 years. If it's new-new, you are paying for a short run of molding. So, if you are the kind of maniac who demands brand new parts on a 12+ year old car (those look like E39 headlamps to me), then you are not concerned with the resale value of your car.
So, perhaps crazy like a fox.

Wow, that makes these look cheap at $700:

Blimey. That pretty insane.
Incidentally, the headlights for my shoebox are $5-10 depending on the seller. That makes me happy.

So there I was, all set to buy a Focus ST (ST1) for a hair under 20k. I could deal with the standard audio I told myself, I could deal with the ford seats as I'd swap them out for some Corbeau A4s I told myself, but I had to have HIDs! No sweat right? My roomie gets cost on Ford, and Nissan parts! The HID housings are about 2300 (msrp) a side... Sooooooooooooooooooo I bought an ST3 instead.

If that includes bulbs and ballasts that isn't unreasonable. I've been driving with a flickering HID on my STI for a couple years because I don't drive the car that much and best case it is a $200 bulb that I need to replace. If it isn't the bulb it is the $400 ballast. The housing is another $600 if I were to ever need to replace that.

Non-xenon lights run about $150-$200 per side.
