"Asheville"
If you have time, check out the Biltmore Estate . What is your route? There's some really nice mountain driving to be done in that area.

Elaborate? My fiancee and I are heading through Asheville on our way to Jacksonville this May and we're planning a scenic route.

Now you're putting me on the spot, because it's been three years since I was out that way. However, US 441 through the Smokeys between Cherokee and Pigeon Forge is gorgeous. The road can be a little heavily traveled, though. Pigeon Forge is sort of like a poor-man's Branson, and is home of Dollywood, the theme park owned by Dolly Parton. Cherokee is a mecca for tacky mountain souvenirs ("authentic replica Indian moccasins"). If the timing is right, Sevierville has some nice hotels, and isn't quite as tacky as Pigeon Forge. Looking at Google Maps, just about any of the US highways are quite scenic. Even I-40 over the mountains is a nice drive. I don't know where you're driving from, but west of Asheville is Cade's Cove , another gorgeous spot and worth a stop, if you have time.

We're coming from Indiana, but we're planning to head through Nashville, then towards Asheville area. I'll have to pitch that to her and see what happens. I have a feeling the details will end up being mostly spontaneous, but having a few planned stops. Thanks for the input. :)

Which Jacksonville are you going to? FL? NC?

Jacksonville, NC. Big family reunion for my grandma's 75th anniversary and we're taking the opportunity to turn it into a 2 week vacation for ourselves as well. Hoping to move to NC sometime later this year.

Neat. I grew up in Norfolk, and my wife lived in Jacksonville for a time as a child. Her father was in the USMC. We met in Norfolk after her father was transferred there. Whichever way you go, it's a great drive. We made the drive from Austin to Norfolk just this past Thanksgiving. Driving the length of TN can be a bit tedious. But once you hit the mountains, it gets really nice. Have a great time, be safe!
