Motive Gear Mini Spool! No more one wheel peels for me.

So only one wheel had power going to it?

Now you've done it! Btw, Mark Donohue roadraced with a spool. Be very careful if you ever try to flat-tow with it.

Here we go. A 5000 lb drift machine cometh!
![]() 01/11/2015 at 20:14 |

Yes it now has an open diff, which is VERY open because I cannot for the life of me get more than one wheel to spin at a time. This should make it a full time locked 2wd car.

I see lots of burnouts in your near future!
![]() 01/11/2015 at 20:16 |

I don't plan on flat towing it but that is good advise. this is only planning to be temporary. This was $35.00 bucks a limited slip is $400.00. I'll eventually upgrade it but this will do for now. I'm aware of the risk and drawbacks of a spool but the 1 wheel drive had to go.

That's the plan.

I need more POWAHHHH! This thing is sloooooowww. With the spool I don't even think it will be able to do a burnout. At least I will be able to get a bit of traction in the snow.

Engine swap time? There's probably small things that you can do to make it a little faster in the mean time, Haha.

Yeah I'm gonna do a Cam and 4barrel carb & full 3" exhaust in the near future(in the next 2-3 months)
![]() 01/11/2015 at 20:24 |

That glasspack you were talking about, Did you ever find a good one?
All that stuff should make it 20x more awesome sounding than stock, Haha.
![]() 01/11/2015 at 20:27 |

not yet! I'm not even gonna bother with modifying the current exhaust. it's too rusted out that I'll just replace the whole thing in the coming months.

Ah, That's probably a good idea! Prioritizing maintenance is the best way to go about it though!

Chirp chirp chirp goes the inside tire. Luckily you're like half a mile from your rear axle while driving that car, so I'd imagine you won't even hear it.
![]() 01/11/2015 at 21:07 |

It also helps that I'm completely deaf in one ear. I don't imaging it will bug me too much I'd rather it chirp while turning than do a one wheel peel every thing I touch the throttle.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but while a FULL SPOOL is "OK" in some cases for street use, a mini spool is really dangerous. They perform the same task but are not equivalent in strength.
A full spool will put stress on your axle shafts/splines in addition to your wheel studs, but most of the time that stuff can take the pain.
A mini spool puts a shit ton of stress on the cross shaft and therefore your carrier case and BAD STUFF can happen. FWIW I threw away a few mini spooled 9" carriers that had signs of damage.
I think the car in question is a Lincoln Conti, correct? If so you should have a 9" rear (with good axle retention at the housing ends) and disc brakes as a safety.
But you have a big boy rear in that car. It is not that hard to find a drop-in center section with both non-highway gears and a traction lok limited slip diff. The weight of the vehicle is also not in your favor.
I urge you to reconsider. Run the open diff until you can do it even a half-assed way. This is like 1/32nd assed.

I don't think I have the power to snap the pins in this thing. The car had 159HP 35 years ago even less now.
Yes I have a 9" rear end. Drum brakes on the back but the axles are help in place on both ends by 4 bolts.
This is purely a temporary thing until I can get a real posi. I won't need a full posi until I have a power plant that is worth talking about.

Ehhhh, I don't think that's a good idea. It's a street car, not a drag racer.
![]() 01/12/2015 at 00:34 |

Why can't it be both?
![]() 01/12/2015 at 07:12 |

You don't need big power to snap the cross-pin. All you need is stress, and you'll get that just backing out of the driveway. Turning 5,000 pounds of Lincoln with a spool is going to put a whole lot of strain on the carrier, axle shafts and that pin.
As much of a hassle as it is to get in there, I'd wait til you get a real posi.
And as for snow, you might get forward traction, but you'll never turn the thing.
![]() 01/12/2015 at 07:48 |

You can, but spooled rear ends make lousy street cars.

Let me elaborate, because I don't want to sound like I'm just pissing on your parade.
What do you really want to do with this car? How do you want to use it? If you just want a cheap burnout machine to tool around town in, well then enjoy your spool. I was under the impression, that you really want to put some miles on that beast. If that's the case, you'll enjoy the car a lot more, if you spend a bit more money on a new diff. The Ford 9" with the dropout center-section, makes this an easy thing to do. Since they're super common, lockers are very reasonably priced as well.

LIke I said to others. I will eventually put in a real limited slip diff. My goal for this car is to make it a 300-ish HP street/strip machine. Think Chevelle but with 4 doors and 19 feet long.
muscle car-ish super sedan.
mini spool $35.00. a good locker or posi $400.00+
But there is no way I'm keeping this thing open diff.

Fair enough!

Let me know how your mini-spool experiment goes! If all is well, I might put one in my G-body.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm gonna go that route or not. Might go with a Automatic Locker instead. I haven't quite decided yet.
