I do this thing I call the "grip test" every morning when I leave the house. There's an short section of empty, flat road between my house and the main roads, and this is usually what I do.

See how many gears will allow me wheelspin at 2K RPM*

See how much pedal it takes to lock up the fronts.

I do it every time, and it's a good indicator to me what to expect. Today, when I got wheel spin in third gear, I turned off the radio, and put my coffee down to concentrate for my special stage to the Metro parking garage.

*#1 may not sound like a big deal until you realize I'm driving a 90bhp Vanagon on Nokian Hakkapeliittas. Any wheel spin is something to take notice to.
