yup. I'd rather have a GT3 RS 4.0 over a 2.7 RS. The 4.0 is worth less but is the faster car.

I would hope so given that they've had 50 odd years to improve it. But a Boeing 737 flies 600 mph and I fall asleep on them all the time. Faster doesn't always mean more exciting.

Good god new cars *have improved crumple zones, chassis legs, collapsable crossmembers and other necessary if heavier engineering technologies that keep me from turning into chunky salsa during a bad wreck, yet are still faster and get better fuel mileage than their lighter counterparts decades ago so I as a consumer pay no penalty for all the improvements I enjoy.

We pay by having cars that look like bars of soap cast in a wind tunnel. I like thin a-pillars, low door sills and no B-pillars. All of those things have been mandated out of existence. Undeniably more dangerous than a new car but don't you like a bit of danger?

My take on the size differences is: 1) crumple zones and lots more safety equipment; 2) so many more options available; and 3) as someone else pointed out, people are getting bigger. I remember going to Ford's Theater before they restored it - those seats were tight. And the oldest subway cars here in NYC have one seat with four people indentations. They are routinely filled by 3 people.

You nailed it. There's way more room in my "old" 1999 Suburban than in a new one. Cars so damn thick now! And btw, the 2002 is a gorgeous 60's design and one of my all-time faves. Great ride!

It's not a boring car. But to me, a new 911 is more boring than a 1964 911. Strokes for folks. New one is faster and more efficient all that but I want manual steering, air cooled wailing and the smell of gasoline wafting over vinyl.

I haven't driven the new 911 but I have had seat time in plenty of new exotica (R8 V10, McLaren 650S) and it just doesn't excite me as much as old stuff does. The steering on the 650S was incredible! The car turns like it has a pivot under your butt, it's amazing! And I'm sure the new 911 is much the same way but that's not what I look for in my personal car. I like simple vehicles where I feel a part of the machine.

I agree with you Cletus, new "soap bar" cars just aren't for me at this point in my life. Not to mention how big a pain they are to work on. Perhaps if I have children I will have to change my ways, or just get something bigger and safer...

My 1976 Delta 88 was the same size as a 1976 Chevrolet Impala.
The Delta was 228" nose-to-tail, 124" wheelbase, and 102" wide (not counting mirrors).

My great aunt married late in life (she was in her 40's when she got married)....she married a wealthy insurance broker back in the late 60's....he took her Porsche shopping and she couldn't make up her mind what color she wanted.
That's how she ended up with 3 of them, one green, one red and one white. I was about 12 at the time and I remember her driving the shit out of them.
My great aunt lived to be 88 years old and she was a badass the whole way up to the end.

Computer aided design tends to help that alot.
All kinds of multivariat optimizations that used to be estimated by the hand and eye are similated almost exactly to the accuracy the need to be.
I'd be shocked if modern cars didn't perform better. People don't drive old stuff because of the numbers they can pull off, they drive them because they like them.
