///M badges right near where it clearly says 320d? Why BMW?!

Same reason Nissan Nismos everything now.
What comes with the M badge on this? anything? At least the Nismo cars usually have something extra.

I think a sport steering wheel and tweaked suspension.

That's kind of weak, lol.
Like a Nismo Juke, as much as a weird choice as it is, at least has different trim, power upgrades, suspension, and a lsd. The RS has brake upgrades. and like 20 more hp than the Nismo and a lsd.
From a M badged car I would expect more than just simple bolt ons.....

You'd probably hate my car, then.

Well, at least yours is a performance coupe. The X3 is a bloated SUV. I think BMW was a little excessive with M badges on the M235i, but at least it has performance to back it up.

Fair enough. If it's any compensation, I think they got rid of the M badges on the fenders of the 2015+ M235i. Mine is a '14.

How do you like your M235i?

I really like it. It's stupidly good fun, and I feel like it's pretty good value too (for a new car). Love it.
If you want a performance car, it's a great way to go. It ticks all of those boxes (except I'd rather have a real LSD over the open-diff. Getting that sorted soon). If you like tech stuff, look elsewhere. My car (base model) doesn't have reversing sensors or a camera, navigation, voice activation, bluetooth audio streaming (I'm not joking), or stuff like that. The nice thing is the base package and a fully loaded model have exactly the same performance bits.

The special-ness of the M badges died a long time ago. They're just decoration now, which doesn't really bother me.

Because BMW stop caring.
