My brother has a silver B5 S4, like this one, and he's getting a 2013 Golf TDI. He's offered to sell me the S4 for ~$3000. It would be a track only car for me, so no plate or road insurance needed (Title tax is $200). I'd also consider stripping the interior and doing a roll cage. Am I an idiot for considering this as a reasonable option?

All depends on what condition the car's in, but 3k seems pretty cheap for a B5 S4.

Nope. plus i think, (at least in michigan) family can re-title vehicles for $1

It would be completely idiotic if you bought it. So I'll do your favor and I will buy it.

Tip or Manual? Sounds awesome though, tell me a little more about it. Accidents, mods please?

It's functional, but it's had front suspension control arms done in the last 5K miles, and needs rear bushings done. Allegedly there is an occasional misfire, but it's not enough that I could reasonably care that much as a track car.
As a car to drive daily, I would care.

Manual, and to my knowledge, it has one minor collision (no unibody or suspension mount damage). Has an APR tune, but that's neither here nor there for me. I also think it has an exhaust of some description, but I haven't seen the car myself in about 3 months (when I last visted home)
It's in need of a thorough cleaning, but if its a track car, I'm not concerned with that.

I have first right of refusal, contractually. :)

Then get it! Most of them seem to be Tip and if they aren't then super expensive.
It would be a great track car, and fun to have around! I suggest that you get a detail and then go for it!

They are in Illinois, and I'm in Georgia. Because we have the insane title tax, we have to pay to have title issued.
But there's no way in hell I will put a plate on it. I'm already paying out the ass for insurance on 3 cars, the motorcycle, and the house.

Seriously though, I dd a B5 S4 and I would be offended if you didn't buy it.

Reading all the posts seems like it's pretty good candidate for a track car.
Now the other question is, are you capable of - and comfortable with - dropping an engine? Because you will be doing that a lot with a B5 S4...especially if it's a track rat.

Provided I have a good service manual, yes, I could reasonably do it.
Basically anything that's not on top of the engine requires dropping it? (Read: Replacing the turbos)

Yes. ie: turbos. But it's super easy to pull.

Are there any upgraded turbos that focus on reliability over making more power? Or is it just doomed to have going or gone turbos all the time?

There are lots of turbo choices, but the stock turbos are very reliable if you don't beat them to hell and if your tune isn't very aggressive. Most go with a K04 which is an upgraded factory turbo.

I may find out what APR tune my brother has installed on it, and I may revert it back to reasonable if it's not already there. The only thing is that this will be a track car, so they need to be able to take some harder driving.
