Finally someone said it. They suck. I think my best friend said it correctly this morning on Facebook: "Seriously though, guys. I'm just about all Hopped out. How come if a cook puts a ton of salt in your dinner you say it's too salty? And if the person behind the counter at D&D puts too much sugar in your coffee you say it's too sweet. But when a brewer loads as many hops as humanly imaginable in a beer you say it's the greatest fucking thing ever and I'm a jerk for disagreeing with you? Does it mean I don't like good beer...I hope not...I could name you a few dozen great local-hipster-craft-artisan-micro-brews that take it easy on the hops and make a beer that tastes like beer instead of a bottle of perfume soaked potpourri. At this point I think it's prudent to mention that Portland (all of it) needs to brew a new beer. I'm pretty sure that every major release for the past three years has just been trying to capitalize on the farmhouse-saison-hipsta-pils wave of success. Somebody make me a porter for the winter."

IPA's can be great if they're well made, but yes, it seems like many brewers these days just dump a ton of hops in and call it done. A good IPA is hoppy but balanced.

IPAs aren't my favorite, but I enjoy them from time to time. A few years ago I went on a tour at the Weyerbacher brewery, if you've never had any of their offerings I'd highly recommend trying one of their beers. The guide for the tour talked a little bit about hops, and why certain people love bitter hoppy beers like IPAs, and others would much rather have a wheat beer, or something not as hoppy. According to him it was that the more bitter beers you drank the more your taste buds would be overloaded. So if you drink IPAs all the time you'd need to go for consistently more hoppy ones to still get your fix, so to speak.

If you like it, drink it. There's something for everyone. I *love* IPA personally. I also love Kolsch, Pilsners, Stouts and many more. My palate tends towards the bitter side, so IPA work the best for me. The problems I have with belgians is that I don't like belgian strain yeast. I know it's part of what makes them unique, but it doesn't work for me. And even beers I don't like I can appreciate the quality without personally enjoying the flavor.

I like IPAs when done correctly - see Dogfish Head's 90-Minute as a great example. But, like you, I tend to care little for the niche IPAs that try to race compete for being the hoppiest ever. When I see things like "Hopocalypse" or "Hopsplosion" or crap like that, it's an automatic turn off.

That being said, there is the common misperception hops are necessarily bitter, and correspondingly, that hoppy beers must also necessarily bitter. Depending on the type of hops used (bittering or aromatic), the method of brewing, and several other factors, what would seem like a very hoppy beer based on the description might actually be quite mild.

For myself, though, I tend to trend towards saisons, blondes, and lagers on the lighter side. If I want something a bit darker, there are various excellent stouts and porter out there.

I would also recommend making a foray into sours; they make great sipping beers with just as much depth of character as an IPA. I predict that sour beers will be the next big beer movement as we see the IPA craze start losing momentum.

Too many assholes with pretentious moustaches, fixie bikes, and tight jeans love their IPAs, when it often tastes like a Coors Light full of ground-up aspirin.

A good IPA is a great thing, but the format has been played out for 2 or 3 years now, and it's essentially devolved into a a hopiness competition, which is both dumb and unenjoyable.

I don't get the hate for farmhouse/saisons/sours, though. There are a lot of mediocre versions of these formats being made (as is the case with every format, including and especially porters and stouts), but the best things happening in beer right now involve wild yeast, period.

Eh, while I do agree that IPA's are way overrepresented in craft brew beers, I also like them. Then again, I also like stouts, brown ale, Irish Reds, kolsh, saisons, and pretty much all the other types too, with lambics and fruity beers being a major exception (blegh), and wheat beers leaving me indifferent. My issue is that so many breweries try and cash in only on what's "popular" at the moment, and wind up ignoring the huge variety of beers that are possible to make. My fridge isn't filled with just one kind of beer, I've got 6ers of lagger, bombers of specialty stouts, bottles of nut brown ales, and whatever struck my fancy at the liquor store the day I went last.

Kinja'd!!! pauljones > Mattbob

Flavor depends on a great many things, not the least of which is the style of hop. From there, there are a great many other factors (beer style, other ingredients, brewing techniques, etc.) that can influence the final character that the hops impart in a beer.

As for sours, they can be a fairly unpredictable sub-category of beers for a number of reasons. To start with, traditional sours are made by allowing wild yeast strains or bacterias into the brew - a process that can often be more an art than a science. Secondly, sours are a traditionally small market here in general, and in the US in particular. Most people don't have as much experience with them. And, finally, as they being to catch on, many microbreweries are trying different variations and hybrid beer styles inspired by traditional sours.

That being said, there's nothing like a good sour, and many of the hybrid sour styles I've come across have been fantastic. Sours have as much character and complexity as any IPA, and the style tends to have a greater depth, given the conceptual ease that it can be mixed with other styles.

I highly recommend trying a few.

That's... exceedingly narrow-minded.

If your reason for not trying the variety of different beers that microbrews bring to the table is that you don't like them for making IPAs, that's pretty extreme. And frankly, there are some pretty bad Belgian beers out there, too. Not only that, but many American microbreweries make Belgian-style Quads, Tripels, etc. I would also assert that in terms of Witbiers, Farmhouse Ales, and IPAs, traditional Belgian breweries have been far outstripped by many contemporary American microbreweries.

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > 505Turbeaux

Kinja'd!!!3

There's room in beer appreciation for everyone's opinion. That said, you're wrong. As a brewer and a beer nerd, I can tell you that what you're categorically rejecting is the AMERICAN IPA as a style, not all IPAs. The traditional (i.e., "real" English) IPA style does not emphasize - or even include - a dry hopped floral fresh-cut-grass-in-the-face nose, which is what you don't like. In fact, I bet you'd be hard pressed to distinguish most English IPAs from an American pale ale or, heck, even some amber ales depending on what we're talking about.

Also, "farmhouse" and "saison" have nothing to do with IPAs.

If you don't like hop-forward beers that's totally cool, there are like 8 billion porter, stout, other ale and even (gasp!) lager varieties for you to enjoy. THAT'S what's totally fantastic about how popular craft beer has become. Just so happens a lot of people who like craft beer like hops. I get it, the struggle is real!

Kinja'd!!! pauljones > Mattbob
09/18/2014 at 12:59

Kinja'd!!!0

The surge in IPAs over the last decade was also little more than a trend/fad. It happens in the beer world. Different regions go through different beer fads. IPAs are on the way out. A few of the best IPAs that have been extremely successful will stick around as a tribute to the style, but the mass of smaller (and sometimes lower-quality) IPAs have already begun to disappear in the North East. Sours are on the rise, though there seems to be something of a trend towards de-centralization in terms of dominant beer styles, especially after what we saw with IPAs. The sheer number and proliferation of IPAs got to so overbearing as to turn away many beer fans, something that I believe beer culture will try to avoid again. In addition to the rise in sours, I've also noted a rise in dark ales, quads, tripels, and wheats.

I like IPAs, but every now and again you get one that just takes it to crazy levels simply because they can. Not as bad as porters that take things as far as they can and end up tasting like sewage, but still pretty bad. :/

Still, even those I'd take over the dismal Carlsberg Lime thing that I'm drinking now. At a third of the price of the actually nice beers I thought it would be decent enough for the money... It's so bad that if someone offered me it for free, I'd turn it down :(

Portland, OR is basically the beer capital of the United States. Not to mention the west coast style IPA is furiously bitter. As such, the abomination is localized here. Portland brewers tend to think that "bitter" and "better" are so close in spelling and pronunciation that they may as well be interchangeable.

Rogue Dead Guy is one of my favorites though, that is from your neck of the woods!

ehh, it really is a separate category when you get into the ones that are brewed specifically to be sour.

mmmm yes. Agreed. Even though I like IPA's I do agree that IPA's have hit peak popularity. People do get way into them... It's just another beer. Just like those damned Dave Matthews band fans.

I admit that I've had some Belgians that can be construed as a sour have been absolutely amazing. My bad experiences with sours have been at the Michigan Beer fest where some breweries make beers just to be super sour. I just can't do that. Just like IPA's that are just way too hoppy without regard to flavor.

Dead Guy is a damn good brew. I just drove by the brewery last month.

Man, fuck IPA's. They are nasty. Well put, 505.

I like a good ale, amber or red. No fruity shit either.

Naturally. As long as you enjoy what you drink, nothing else matters...there are no rules to abide by!

The whole IPA thing is pretty ridiculous. It's just a way for people to act like they are beer aficionados.

The whole history of them explains why they are so awful. They made them strong and hoppy as fuck so they could be transported between India and Britain without going bad. I'm guessing from India to Britain? So yea, like I said on my Facebook when I found this out, IPA is the freeze dried ice cream or canned vegetables of beer.

Just had a nice coconut porter with my wife at some bar last night.... so much interesting stuff going on outside of IPAs in the beer world.

I really only like the Harpoon IPA or the Dogfish Head 90. I noticed I have been ordering Allagash White a lot when I go out to bars recently.

Also I recently tried the Harpoon Boston Irish Stout and it was better than any other Stout I have had, highly reccomend if you can find it.

Furthermore I am not afraid to say that I am also a fan of pumpkin flavored beers, the few that I've tried are very good.

I just cant drink too many of the pumpkins, I wake up hating myself the next day. Dogfish 90 is great, Harpoon IPA is stellar but it gets me hammered too quick. You must be a new englander with this list. They make Allagash right down the street from my house

IPAs are fine but they've been done to death. I prefer hard ciders or stouts.

You are talking about Victory Hop Devil! And it's one of the lesser IBU IPAs.

IPA's from Michigan tend to be more "balanced" than the IPA's from Pacific NW or Cali. I mean, I tried a beer called Resin from Six Points which had 110 IBUs. Just stooopid. Could not finish it. Arcadia Brewery makes some really good English style ales that do not disappoint.

Biggest IPA towns in existence? Flagstaff couldn't even keep Mogollon Brewing in business. I am disappoint.

Sidenote, am very saddened, still, that I will never have Skunk Ape ever again.
