I've been trying to convince my dad that for the same price as a reasonably loaded up 300C, he can get much more car f0r his money if he goes for something slightly older. The word "European" may or may not also have come out of my mouth. When I said that, what I had in mind was a nicely equipped XC70 or Touareg. Today, he randomly sent me this:
I must admit, it is tempting, as it costs almost exactly the same as a Flex, 300C, Volvo, or Touareg. But I would have to imagine that the only thing more expensive than maintaining a high performance German luxury sedan is maintaining a high performance German luxury sedan with a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Still, it only have 55,000 miles, so there has to be a little more left before the car implodes. Right? And it makes both my and his short list as one of the greatest modern cars you could actually buy.
I should stress that it would take a time warp in some other parallel universe for this thing to end up in our garage. Or my dad has finally gone round the bend.

On a scale of 1 to "Invading Russia in the middle of winter", this rates at "Not accepting Hitler into your art school"
I've read that the W12 version of this car was better anyways, and probably "more reliable" to.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:07 |

The W12 is smoother, but this thing is sportier, and sounds better. Also, I think "Less unreliable" was the word you were looking for.

He should take your advice and buy this car. What could go wrong? It is low mileage and a nice price.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:09 |

Only with a CarMax (or similar) guarantee.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:10 |

On a scale from Yes to No, do you like warranties?
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:10 |

An idea so bad, it has it's own theme song.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:11 |

Buy one from CarMax, spend the extra $3k to get the warranty, and you have an S8 with 300C-level operating costs.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:11 |

On a scale of 1 to pissing into the wind, this is zero.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:13 |

Only S8 currently in CarMax's inventory is $98k, but here is this 2010 S6 with the V10 for the same money as that S8 above:

Make your Dad get one with a Carmax warranty. Be a freaking hero.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:14 |

Definitely would still have some life, though repairs/maintenance would be insanity.
My suggestion? A W210 E55. Very classy/ sporty, can easily be found for nice and cheap, (around $12,000 for the most pristine one), and are strangely and bizarrely reliable. Ridiculous amounts of power and a 0-60 time near the mid-4s.

sounds like he needs to make a visit to his local Cadillac dealer.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:15 |

There was that one time I really wanted a Passat W8 on sale for $4000.
This seems like one of those cases.
"But this Passat has a supercompact 8cyl engine in it!"
"But this Audi has a Lamborghini engine in it!"
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:15 |

Is it at a carmax?
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:16 |

I would advise you both to pull a DeMuro here - get what may or may not be an unreliable car with a CarMax warranty. And your dad should definitely drive one of everything before he pulls the pin out of the Chrysler grenade.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:16 |

That's D4 money, granted non S8.. Honestly I would be more content with that. D3 looks don't do it for me.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:17 |

Why not Duesenberg?
But seriously:
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:24 |

If you decide to buy it, great but go all in and get something V12. If not, Volvo V8 is always a good option.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:26 |

This would make a nice "his and hers" pair with your ride. ;)
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:27 |

I really don't feel like digging for it but I remember reading a review of this car saying the V10 was so detuned and so "not a four door lambo" that they said you're better off buying the W12. It was either motortrend or car and driver I forget.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:29 |

Make him do it! Everybody needs an S8.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:32 |

Do you want to be written out of the will? If not, let him get what he wants. Especially if it's something under warranty vs. a nightmare.

Gone round the bend is one of my favorite sayings.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:38 |

It's the same price until your first visit to the Audi dealership to have some maintenance done, then it cost 3x as much as a warrantied Ecoboost Flex, or a well equipped 300S.

When the question is brand new american vs gently used insanely powerful German luxo rocket. The answer is just about always yes!!!

I refuse to get in on the Phaeton love. It's a porker. Unlike the A8's aluminum construction, the Phaeton is all steel. The Phaeton W12 weighs 5400 lbs —about 800 more than the S8 V10.
Here are some other vehicles that weigh about the same as a Phaeton W12.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:54 |
|
I'd give up 800 lbs of weight it if meant it was half the price.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 16:57 |
|
I'd just get some other luxo barge that costs the same as a Phaeton and isn't so damned heavy.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 17:22 |

If you want reliability there, the only thing you'll get close to it is the base 4.2 liter V8.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 17:47 |

Your dad is (probably) trolling you, but I admit that it'd be awesome to have this car.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 18:13 |

Nonono, new Chrysler 300[various trim] with the big V8 is the correct choice. Murica.

![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:04 |

It could end up with us living on the street after it needed some maintenance, like say, a spark plug change.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:05 |

That's what I was thinking, but I think Carmax is too smart to buy these.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:05 |

Yes.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:05 |

If Carmax ever decides to stock one.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:06 |

I'm confused, does that make it a good idea?
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:07 |

I've seen some listed before but they may have wised up.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:07 |

Erm no me gust the black interior. Perfect otherwise. At least now I know Carmax does those.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:09 |

We looked at the CTS, and really like it. That's also a good contender.

I kinda don't like the Chrysler, as much as I want to.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:13 |

That's also a possibility, but his best friend has one, so...
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:14 |

Yeah, I'm not too jazzed on the whole, "Matching cars" thing.
But V10.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:15 |

He is leaning away from the 300 to begin with. He's as much of a Jalop as any of us.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:16 |
|
I wouldn't quite call it trolling, because he knows I know he isn't gonna get it.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:17 |

I gotta say, as much as I wanted to like the 300, I cannot.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:18 |

1. No
2. Maybe
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:22 |

RWD, big V8...It's just as Jalop as any other big sedan with a V8.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:24 |

It's guaranteed not to fail.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:36 |

Too bad, those would be good genes to have.
Tell him to find a W12 & pull the trigger.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:39 |

It's just not terribly well screwed together. Or terribly interesting.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:43 |
|
Having been in a new Grand Cherokee, I would assume they would be about the same, so they are put together pretty damn well. Interesting is in the eye of the beholder. Like the only thing interesting to me about anything German is the engine. Everything else might as well look like a Camry, they aren't any more interesting.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:47 |
|
No.
Dear god no.
There's already one unreliable Audi in the household, no need for two.
Look at the CTS, 2015 Charger, or literally anything but a used Audi with a Lambo V10.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:50 |
|
Way to be a fun vampire.
CTS maybe. Charger is a big NOPE.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:52 |
|
Y U no Charger?
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:54 |
|
Because why would he pick a Charger over a 300?
If you say Hellcat, I will have to bludgeon you to death with a garden trowel.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:56 |
|
I have been driven in one (Uber) but not driven on. The ride was good, the seats comfy. Surprising amount of legroom, but you don't care about legroom in a driver's car.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 19:58 |
|
Because the 300 has an honestly not great interior and the new Charger's interior seems to be pretty top notch.
And I think it looks better than the 300 as of right now.
Plus the 2015 Charger would have an 8-speed auto compared to the 300's old 5-speed Merc unit. Unless he got a V6, which just no.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:00 |
|
He used the word "V6" at one point. To which I responded that I'm asking about a car he would like to buy, not rent.
I agree that the 300's interior is a bit meh. But really, I don't see him getting a Charger any more than I do the S8. I'm not sure why, but it just won't happen.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:02 |
|
Just get a Chevy SS.
Because damn dat interior.
And the LS3 doesn't hurt.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:10 |
|
Perhaps... but the seed of doubt has been planted in your mind. Next he'll send you a listing for a sort-of recent S class, highly depreciated and therefore attainable, and you'll start to believe. And that's when he starts to win.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:33 |
|
He once sent me a listing for a used A8L after I had been looking at Subarus and Troopers.
He then bought it.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:35 |
|
I will only say that I have heard Audi drivers say that you should only lease them.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:39 |

That sounds like 4chan-level trolling. "Nice Isuzu, son. *snicker*" And then he rolls off in a cloud of comfort and V8 exhaust.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:40 |
|
No he bought it for me, actually.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 20:52 |

Oh. That's pretty awesome.
I stand corrected.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 22:24 |

I'm gonna need you to type out that entire scale, there.
Y'know...for Science.
![]() 09/16/2014 at 23:13 |
|
Oh man, that S8. For a fanboy of VAG, its something amazing (I am). Its not rational at all though, and although it isn't unreliable, it will be costly to maintain. Depends if your father is willing to pay the price and likes the car that much, in which case he is awesome! Also, I think it would be a good idea to consider the most expensive VW CC. I don't think it even on the same segment, but its SO SEXY:
![]() 09/16/2014 at 23:27 |
|
I'm in love with its aesthetic so I'd recommend it anyway. I drove the V6 AWD in Vermont in the snow, the system was great and allowed you to slip free when you wanted to (thanks to 300bhp) but otherwise it kept you on the strong and steady. I'm glad you're trying to push away from SUVs and into badass sedans though.
![]() 09/17/2014 at 10:43 |

The CTS is so glorious.
It also should last a little longer than the above listed audi...
![]() 09/17/2014 at 12:42 |

A mentos tablet would last longer than the above Audi.
![]() 09/17/2014 at 12:47 |

I believe you meant to say " A Mentos tablet dropped into a 2 liter of Diet Coke would last longer than the above Audi."
![]() 09/17/2014 at 13:49 |

if you take care of it, then yea, its a great idea.
plus, after the luxury and POWER bug bites him, you hjust have to enjoy the show (and the car)
![]() 09/17/2014 at 19:27 |

Large, simple engine (sohc, only 3 valves! — less moving parts, less small parts) making a lazy amount of power does that (349hp out of 5.5li is relatively laid-back, IMO).
![]() 09/17/2014 at 21:17 |

I had a phase where I fell in love with the 300, but after reading reviews, I put that idea in the trash. It's a poorly built car.
![]() 09/18/2014 at 02:19 |

which direction are you peeing, I wouldn't care if I was peeing downwind, but upwind wouldn't be smart.

upwind.
