They are getting cheaper here, lots of them are low mileage.

It looks too much like a kia

S Type R is actually pretty cool.

I'm quite sure it is the Kia that looks like the Jag.

Hate the looks, don't mind the drivetrain. I'd be wary of parts failing or electronic problems though, but I know very little about these cars.

Those are a bit out of my reach, but they look awesome, my neighbor has one.

I think they look wonderful, they're definitely the first vision I get when I think Jaaaaag. BUT I know the older bags carry a lack luster sense of reliability and can be expensive to fix
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:22 |

Well it's not an X-Type, so that is good.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:26 |

I never saw anything that wrong with the X-Type. Especially the AWD estate.

I like it.

I guess the latter part can be said about almost all british cars, I don't mind the looks though.

If not an R I'd go for a manual, whether it be diesel or gas. I quite liked the Ford version of it as a manual, but the automatics weren't that great at all.

The Lincoln LS looks much better, but neither are very reliable in the electronics department.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:30 |

Me too, they look great and I guess most british cars from late 90's to early 2000's had faults. How do you feel about a cream leather/dark blue combo?
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:32 |

Whoa I completely missed that one. I'm used to hearing things like that from friends, the Aston looks too much like a Ford, Jag and Kia, so I just take things seriously. Do you like though?
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:34 |

The autos were 4 speed J-gate right?
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:35 |

A type-s has the power, they are just very unreliable
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:35 |

I just can't embrace the rear of the Lincoln, looks like someone just chopped it off, I quite like the rest of the car though. I'll check how much they are going for here.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:37 |

Let's play a game then. I'll give you some cars, order them from most reliable to least reliable. Jag XJ8, Jag S-type, Land Rover P38, Alfa 164.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:39 |

5 or 6 speed J Gate. Neither super reliable. Unless getting a supercharger, I'd go for the complexity reduction of the manual/less electronics.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:40 |

In manual 6 form I think they're underrated. The 8 appeals, but is automatic only. There isn't a Lincoln "R."
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:41 |

that is amazing. Sure the Aston is the British super car but nothing says British class like that right there
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:41 |

5 or 6 beats my 2010 4 speed Hydro-barge so that's ok. I don't think they imported manuals here :(
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:42 |

1-4, 4 being the least reliable:
1) Alfa 164
2) S-Type
3) XJ8
4) P38

Still more reliable than the P38 I was thinking about buying. +1 to the Jag.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:45 |

That's a pity. Maybe save for an R then. A supercharger helps with a lot of woes. I've personally considered an XJR from that era many times.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:47 |
|
Prices for R's here near $40k, I'll need to sell the scoobie to get one, that's something I'm not prepared to do.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 00:51 |

I'd hold off then. I think these aren't cars to totally decimate your garage for, especially if its automatic only.

I'm going to buy a sunday cruiser still, the R is out, S-types are in the race.
![]() 09/14/2014 at 01:01 |

They're not bad. X-Type AWDs aren't either, though I think the S Type platform is more Sunday cruise-ish.

I would take the S-Type over the X, having owned the X. The AWD system is a PITA (gets hot due to location, fluid is annoying to change) and front struts are brutal to replace. Transmissions were bad initially, but most of the terrible ones were replaced with factory rebuilt units that were fixed. X was a good car other than that - biggest other problem was that crumbly British plastic everywhere in the car. BTW mine was blue on cream leather and I loved seeing it in the driveway. Great color combo.
The X350's are not much more here and they are a substantially better car (components are much more high end). Biggest problem, since they have the timing chain upgrades already, is air suspension issues.
You might consider XK8, late XJ6, XKR or late XJS as well.

This is the perfect car for one of us (meaning "not me") to get one, a Type R, from Carmax with the warranty.

Based on the experience a co-worker who bought one of these used in mint condition, I'd say they're nice looking and nice driving money pits. And if you live somewhere that gets snow, this car will need snow tires.
I recall that he bought the V8 version for around $16K and after few years, he sold it for something like $3000 (it had some expensive things that needed fixing... like the transmission if I recall correctly).
I wouldn't buy one myself unless I didn't mind spending $200-300/month on repairs and maintenance and had an independent mechanic that specialized in Jags near me.

I had a family friend who invited me to stay at their place in Florida for a few days when I was maybe 12ish. This was their beach house, and the were Maryland Residents (like me) for most of the year.
They had an S-Type with a V8 that was maybe 3 years old with stupid low miles. We were driving it, and it was having some issues with the A/C and whatnot, so we stopped by the dealer.
While I was waiting, assuming they were just getting it serviced or whatever, the family friend gets his wife and me and says were good to go (he was working out logistics while we waited in the waiting room).
We walk outside and get into a brand new XJ Vanden Plas, which I assumed was the rental car or something.
As it turns out, they were leaving a day before the S-Type's repair would be ready. The guy thought it was logical to just buy a brand new car instead of waiting for it.
Wish I stayed in touch with them...

If you want to check reliability check this English site . That 164 is less reliable than an S-type. The S-type uses Ford V8s, nothing wrong with that. Only horror-electronics (and the diff on a S-Type R) but Alfa has a history with that as well, especially that 164. That P38 is WAYWAYWAY worse, I think it has the highest score on that reliability index EVER!
You're used to Citroëns so you're quite used to horror anyway.

That's far from logical but they do sound like the kind of people worth keeping in touch with.
