So my room mate and I were sitting around bored today watching that episode of Top Gear where Clarkson complains that the sports car is a dying breed and will be gone soon. My room mate promptly agreed and I told him how wrong he is. He claimed there's next to no sports cars available for sale in the US, and since I disagreed, we set out to make a list. So we did, and here it is: every "sports" car available for sale new in the US right now. What did we miss?
Here's our rules for the challenge:
Had to be defined as it's own model, not just a trim, on the manufacturer's website.
Had to be defined by the manufacturer as a performance / sport car.
Had to be listed as currently available for sale on the manufacturer's web-site.
Used the manufacturer listed MSRP, not the average paid or anything like that.
All trims listed under base model pricing, i.e. all Mustangs are one entry; not one for the V6, V8, Shelby, etc.
Any suggestions for changes or additions of cars we missed?

I agree. Roommate did agree, saying the S80 is Volvo's sports car. I told him Volvo doesn't currently have a sports car, sadly. He was adamant about it so it made it to the list. I think I'll get rid of it though.

![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:48 |

According to Scion and Kia, those both are. I guess they could be considered very sport or entry-level sports cars? Since the manufacturers classify them that way, we had to include them by our own criteria.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:49 |

There are many more sports cars not for sale but for rent. The fastest car is a rental :)
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:49 |

Maybe, just maybe, I could see him saying the C30, but a sports car should get your heart beating, not tell if someone else's heart is beating.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:50 |
|
The definition of sports cars varies quite a bit. I'm sure if I took off the WRX (AWD and has a back seat!) there would be hell to pay since it is a sports car in a way. This is why I included the criteria we used above, which is what the manufacturer/marketing department deems is a sports model.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:50 |
|
There are only 17-18 cars on the list that qualify.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:50 |

I get that it fits the criteria, but I seriously doubt most people would consider that a sports car.

I agree with you on maybe the C30 just barely qualifying, but it is no longer for sale. I removed the S80 because it doesn't belong. He loses, I win. :D

A sporty model =/= sports car.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:52 |

Well, if it has two seats and RWD, then it's a sportscar.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:53 |

All the high schoolers down the block from me would be quite upset if someone told them their tCs weren't sports car. Plus the tC has a massive following that races them and such, and the tC was Scion's FWD sports car for awhile. I'm going to let them stay, unless someone has a good argument against them.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:53 |

So your rules for the challenge was it had an engine.
Also there is no need for the 911 turbo per your rules.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:53 |
|
Forte Koup has the SX trim, which has a 201 hp turbo engine (as does the Forte5 hatchback)
tC is marketed as a sport compact, so I guess it counts.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:55 |

Who races tCs? what racing series? I have never even seen one at a autocross or track day.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 16:57 |

Yeah, S80 is the flagship, not sports car.
If you want a Volvo sports car, you want the S60 T6 R-Design ($43,550+), S60 Polestar ($?), V60 T6 R-Design ($45,150+) or V60 Polestar ($?).

And then...
Chevrolet Spark RS
Ford Fiesta ST
Fiat 500 Abarth
Honda Civic Si
Ford Focus ST
Volkswagen Golf GTI
Follow your own rules! Don't you want to follow the rules?

I think smart has been advertising the fortwo wrong all along...it even has a rear engine!
![]() 09/12/2014 at 17:30 |

Too be fair, Honda and such list those separately ; the Civic has its own page and the Si has its own.
We didn't care too much about the specifics, we mostly made this list because we were bored. I was also curious to see how the pricing broke down, which is why I did the prices. I figured there'd be a bunch of cheap cars (20-40k), not too much inbetween and a ton above 300k. It wasn't supposed to be an end-all list of super specifics and the exact definition of a sports car.
We had no intention of sharing this online, I just figured since he had already typed it up, I could copy and paste it here. Figured Oppo might enjoy it or get a chuckle out of it; not jump up in arms and be so defensive above it.

AWD requires a bit more thought than that (unless you're gonna sit here and tell me that the Skyline GT-Rs weren't sports cars, in which case, shots fired indeed).
But yeah, WWD cars don't belong on this list. Period.
Oh, yeah, and idk about 2+2s either...I mean, come on, those back seats are there as a joke. A place to put the tool bag.

![]() 09/12/2014 at 19:29 |

It's amazing how many cars fit the definition of a sportscar, but an AWD car is not a sportscar.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 19:49 |
|
Why, pray tell? It isn't 1975 anymore. Some AWD cars have been shown to be more performant in the sport of car racing then similarly-powered RWD counterparts...
Hmm...I mean, we're arguing semantics here, which is sort of a lose-lose. I mean, I can sit here and make big grand arguments about why AWD should be considered a sports car drivetrain option, and then some Honda kid'll pop in and tell me that FWD should to, which I will laugh at, which also doesn't make a ton of sense.
So, I guess, fine. Your definition of sports car is different than mine. No harm done.
![]() 09/12/2014 at 23:19 |

The Viper isn't a "Dodge". It hasn't been rebranded back from SRT (yet).
![]() 09/12/2014 at 23:47 |

There are traditional sports cars and sporty cars. I see cars like the WRX as sporty cars but not sports cars because it is too practical and not purpose built to be a sports car. The MX-5 is more like a traditional sports car since it is purpose built and is not very practical.

![]() 09/13/2014 at 02:22 |

I'm old school; a sports car has 2 seats, rear wheel drive, a manual stick shift (No PDK, autos, or computer shifted gizzmos)translation, must have a clutch pedal. 4,6,8,10,12 cyl., or a rotary.
Convertible top defines a sports car, and a solid roof defines a "sporty car" with the aforementioned mechanical parts. It must handle well. A Mazda MX5 is a good cheap example, and a Z06 Corvette convertible a more expensive example...and a 427 Shelby Cobra an Old School example.
The author has muscle cars, exotic super cars, all wheel drive sedans, and a lot of others that do not really seam to be "Sports cars". I really think Roadster defines what I think of when I think sports car; an older Z8, or a new Z4, how about an XKE old or new!!!

I own a V-6 Dodge Charger. It is sufficiently fast off the line, but it is too large at least 1000 lbs too heavy to qualify as a "sports car" IMO.
Besides, my insurance rates are high enough, TYVM, without my carrier deciding that I own a "sports car."

![]() 09/13/2014 at 09:06 |

"Sport" cars have always previously been defined as having only two seats, rear wheel drive, and good handling and performance. By this definition very few of the cars on this list would qualify. "Performance" cars are a different story - the label applies to cars that offer significantly higher performance than the "normal" street driven vehicle.

I don't really see then why the M5 is allowed to be kept on, but there are no AMGs, RSs and so on there. Or the Panamera, Cayenne and so on which are sold as performance cars or performance trims.

Last one doesn't count, trim level. Just make it the 2-series starting in between $30 and $40k

by your definition that means that the Lamborghini huracan, gallardo, audi r8 and several Porsche are not sports cars...which they clearly are

Koenigsegg Agera, I'm sad to say, is not yet for sale in the US. I have the contracts to prove it. :(
There is ONE here, imported under Show and Display. However, the Pagani Huayra ($1.7M) is now completely US legal and available for purchase. As is the Aston Martin Vantage GT ($99K) - the price you listed for the Vantage is the V12 variety.
Additionally, BAC Mono and Ariel Atom are both available. As is the Local Motors Rally Fighter.

Spark RS? I think that should be Sonic RS. There is a Cruze RS, too.
Whether they are sports cars or not is debatable. I wouldn't consider anything bowtie unless it has the SS moniker.
