and I want to smash it with a sledge hammer. Is there a better way to get rid of it, and find it?

You have to be really patient. You once you get into the same room or have it narrowed down to a certain area, it takes about 5 minutes for them to start back up again if you don't move. A lot of times they'll crawl under stuff so you can't smash them so that's why I recommend:
A vacuum. Seriously, use the corner adapter and extensions and everything, you'll suck him up no problem.

Good luck with that. I had one a couple of weeks ago. I went online and it was suggested by many to put molasses in a bowl of water and it will attract them, and they will drown. I had to buy $4 jar of the stuff, and it didn't work. Went to hardware store and bought Roach Motels (says on box it will attract crickets too). Did not work. Early one evening, when I went to the kitchen, there he was on the kitchen floor. I grabbed a paper towel, and when I reached down to grab him, he hopped away (they're fast) with me in hot pursuit, screaming like a mad woman. He went under a recliner in the living room, and I shoved the recliner up, and he hopped under an end table. I tiptoed around table and got him with the paper towel. As much as I hate squeezing insects, I squeezed him till he crunched. I then flushed him down the toilet. Little bastard. They are really loud inside a home. Thankfully, I never heard him while asleep, but when I got up in the mornings, he was chirping somewhere. Like you said, when you try to find them, they shut up.
