The Mazda Navajo. It's a rebranded Ford Explorer sport. According to Wikipedia, it was the first SUV that Mazda ever sold in the US, and it was actually Motortrend's Truck of the Year in 1991. They only made it from 1991-1994.

How did a rebadged Explorer make truck of the year?!?! Were there no other new trucks that year? lol.

I saw one about a week and a half ago, and it was the first I'd seen in years.

This just ruins all credibility for any Motortrend recommendation.

The Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1971 was the Chevy Vega
for 1980, it was the Chevy Citation
for 1995, the Chrysler Cirrus
for 1996, the Dodge Caravan
for 1997, the Chevy Malibu
for 2001, the Chrysler PT Cruiser
'nuff said?

They were actually a decent deal. Less money than an Explorer with all the same features.

One of the Mazda techs on here posted a while back about someone ordering a part for one, and how they couldn't believe someone had one.

Yeah, but we already knew that I suppose, lol.

You had me at Vega.
Even though I, as any other Jalop, can admire a Vega in pristine condition, car of the year material it most certainly is not.

haha, they probably would have been better off going to the Ford dealer.

early 90's the SUV craze had not yet gotten into full swing. my mom bought a pathfinder back in 1987, the 2 door model, and we were the oddballs in a school pick-up line full of station wagons.
the late 80's and early 90's were an awesome time for SUVs: the bronco, the full-size blazer were still around. there were relatively few of these mid-sized SUVs.
when my mom went to trade her first pathfinder for a new one, they had stopped making the 2 door model. apparently, the 2 door SUVs were taxed for importation as trucks whereas the 4 door models were taxed as station wagons, making pricing more affordable (or maximizing profits).
anyway, that's why there seemed to be a drop-off in 2 door SUV imports in the early-mid 90's. pathfinders and 4 runners come to mind. not sure how these things affected domestic 2 door suvs. or if the market just wanted 4 door mid-sized blazers and explorers rather than big ol broncos and full sized 2 door blazers.

One of my dad's coworkers had a lifted one in white. Was actually pretty cool but even as a little kid I remember wondering why I never saw any other ones. Probably because they never made a 4 door one!

Oh, if only they'd put a rotary engine in it!

Oh it's real simple.
Because those, as well as JD Power awards are purchased not won

Also known as the '90s Ford-built midsize SUV that U-Haul will rent trailers for.

Ha. But for real, a rotary SUV would be terrible. No torque!
