Anybody have a daily drive with a proper center-mounted tach?
Here is mine, the Subaru BRZ (pictured: RHD, km/h version):
Anyone else have a ride with such a configuration?

my former Civic had one, with the love it or hate it digital speedo on top
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:20 |
|
Nope this is the best Tach I've ever had
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:24 |
|
LOL, what tach? Note: Not my car pictured.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:25 |

The only thing on my center dash is my tach!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:25 |
|
Wait, what?
Whats a tach? Like attack, or attach? I'm confused.

DAMN, you beat me.

The C4 has it, tach is on top of the steering wheel, and speedo on the middle of the dashboard.

I had a 2008 Si like this and loved the hell out of it. I remember spending a week with a new Porsche and thinking "why isn't their pannel better than my Civic?"
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:34 |
|
Nope.
Also, 260 km/h LOL
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:36 |
|
that dead space behind the steering wheel would irritate the piss out of me
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:39 |
|
Nope. Most of my gauges are arranged around the two large speedo and tach gauges.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:40 |
|
not mine but same as what I had in my 90 F150
it still stands as one of my favorite looking dash clusters with the large speedo, large tech and smaller opposite gauges.
Also when the tach hit 3500 RPMs it felt like the engine was going to tear itself loose and take off- violently.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:43 |
|
how about shift lights on the steering wheel?
my car has the tach to the left, speedo in the middle, but similar to this replacement of the tach with an aftermarket one, I saw years ago someone who went to the effort of putting the tach in a middle, but cannot for the life of me find a picture of the mod anymore, seemed like a ton of work but the outcome was perfect

Center mounted tach and speedometer.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:46 |

I think I'm doing it wrong. Also, my ABS is broken.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:55 |

what is this!!!!!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:57 |
|
What in the world?
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:59 |

Center mounted tachs are the truth. There's a reason why Porsche has been doing it forever...
![]() 09/10/2014 at 11:59 |
|
yours? Which car?
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:01 |
|
I don't hate it, but I'm not sure I would grow to love it.
At least it has the analog tach; I drive an S2000 with the odd digital tach.. That was weird.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:01 |

MINI!!!! haha
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:02 |

tachometer. Which cars do those dashes belong to?
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:05 |

Fiat 500!!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:06 |

Obviously joking, but base model 80's Cherokee & base model 00's Impala.

Not my photo, but I own this car. Abarth 500.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:09 |

Center? No. Proper? Yesssss

Abarth

The RS200 version of the Toyota Altezza (IS300) swaps the tach for the speedometer and puts it in the center. I'd love to swap mine (Digital speedo!), but it's only in kilometers, and I only recognize freedom units (aka imperial)
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:10 |
|
yours? Which one is that?
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:10 |
|
Then you just mount a tach right in front of the wheel, and you bam! you got a center mounted tach
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:11 |
|
It's sorta in the center... and is the only analog gauge I have.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:11 |
|
My Mini has one
Granted the speedometer and other things are not where they should be, but it does have a small digital readout in the tach for speed.

500 Abarth. In practice I wish the band for the tach was thicker, it's a bit hard to read IMO
The new one looks cool though, I really want to see it in person
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:12 |

I never appreciated the center tach until my car; now I consider it crucial for anything with a manual or a responsive dual-clutch trans.
Not sure about that bmw wheel though :/

I've driven my friends a few times. It grows on your pretty quick actually.

Keeping it subaru.

my dad had a 98 - I believe - f150, and yes, the thing sounds angry beyond 3500 rpm. Highway merging was always suspect!

Chevy Sonic RS. Non RS-s are the same but the tach has a weird pattern
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:30 |
|
Indeed! But I'm not a bro. :P I've seen your posts on doing AutoX with yours, looks fun. I just don't have the patience to AutoX anymore. Spend all day and get maybe 8 minutes of seat time if you're lucky.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:30 |

I got paired of with an older similar generation Chevy pickup - so of course we had to see whose was best. I gassed it off the line and hit 5k RPMs for the first time .... Never again did I after that. It was near traumatizing

How very European with the DD MMM date format!

I loved it too, I had an 08 LX. I miss it now that I have my TL. It took me a while to figure out how fast I was going with an analog speedometer once again
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:38 |

Oh
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:38 |

Indeed!

My first car was an 1974 Alfa Alfetta GTV. It was a rust bucket. I brought it from an autocrosser who also owned and Lotus Europa. So the car came with an Ansa exhaust and Konis. Hooked on Alfas since!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:42 |

I have driven one! I thought the gauges were a bit chintzy, though they do not lack legibility at speed.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:43 |
|
It reminds me of a chronograph watch face.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 12:54 |

And the Alfa GTV6 dash. Busso V6 and center tach!!!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 13:02 |

Yeah, it does stink to only get a few runs, but I enjoy it too much to skip out. I know people in the local porsche club so I do it with them, we end up doing 10 runs or more. Last time I drove my car 10 times and other people's cars for another 4 runs. If you can find a smaller group that does autox maybe you can get the same experience.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 13:11 |
|
Eh, I've done an event where we were literally hotlapping. I think we got around 30 runs. It was a small Cobalt-centered event being held by a local Miata club. I think we had maybe 20 cars. That was pretty fun since most of us were out there in similar cars. When I run the Cobalt in SCCA stuff I'm in SMF, and that's no fun. The car isn't prepped for it like the proper cars for that group are, so I'm much slower.
Maybe next year I'll take the Sonic to some SCCA stuff, since it's bone stock.

I traded the Si in on an old C5 Corvette with a H.U.D., so I still have the speedo front-and-center :)

Wife and I test drove a RAV-4 back in.... 2009? She hated it for the center mounted tach. I was like "But because racecar!" and she wasn't having it.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 13:39 |
|
Yes. While it's not a car, it is one of my two daily drivers.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 13:39 |

And The Lord said: "if she won't have it, none will be had."
![]() 09/10/2014 at 13:43 |

I have yet to see bike where the tach was not center-mounted, exception being my Buell that had only a speedo (no tach, nor fuel gauge).
Admittedly, I haven't seen too many bikes yet. Definitely getting another soon!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 13:51 |
|
Yeah, on a bike, especially when you can rev to 11,000+ - you care a lot more about RPMs than speed.
Honestly, I almost never look at the speedo when I'm on my bike, with the exception of being on back roads when there's no traffic.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 14:09 |

It isn't as bad as you think.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 14:10 |
|
Do you have an echo, or just experienced one?
![]() 09/10/2014 at 15:14 |
|
I have an xB and it's not bad at all. It seriously isn't even noticeable.
![]() 09/10/2014 at 18:20 |
|
that's quite the torque upgrade!
![]() 09/10/2014 at 22:49 |
|
Center-mounted tach? No, there's no room.
![]() 09/11/2014 at 03:04 |
|
I don't know about you guys, but the windshield is a better place to mount a tachometer than the dashboard.
After this, someone should put together a list of cars that come with HUD display from the factory for the American market.

What kind of car?
![]() 09/11/2014 at 09:26 |
|
It's different, for sure! I loved the Si too. Great driving car with a really nice interior for it's price. To be truthful, I always looked longingly at TLs... it's like they're the bigger, nicer brother of the Si! But C5s are soooooo cheap and hoonable...
