It's safer, but I think they could still put a 10' strip of grass/gravel in-between the racing surface and the runoff.
Makes it safe, but will still punish a mistake. You'll lose lots of positions, but won't retire.

A strip of gravel wouldn't make it safer. It would be basically a ditch and the pavement lip on the outside of the corner could cause cars to flip.

At the time it was paved (last month?), I read that it was done for the safety of motorcycles, not necessarily for any car-related reasons.
