Always wondered this, never been able to find out why. Why did they name the 991 (7th gen) a lower number than the previous gen 997?

Well, 997 was an incremental update over the 996...the 991 is an entirely new car.
Likewise with the Boxster/Cayman...the 987 was an incremental upgrade over the 986, and the new car's chassis code is 981.

I just want to know what happens when they run out of 99x numbers.

I assume they decided to change it up before they got stuck at 999.

The 997 was not an incremental update. Every part except for the roof was different. That's hardly an "update".

In Porsche's universe it counts as basically a reskinning. Same platform as the 996. The 991 is an entirely new platform.

Pretty sure all their computer systems were set up to only accept 3 characters for the model designation. We could check with DeMuro, but I think internally it was referred to as the P1K bug.

Because it's less awesome than the 997.
(Give me a real handbrake or give me...well, a real handbrake. Or else!)
