(automatic) 2001-2005 Lexus IS300. Not too fast, but definitely fun. You can find some grazing the $5k price point.

$1400

Include $3600 for a stroker crank aggressive cam, and massive carbs.

Not as fast as the M5, but easily 10x more fun.

Buy it now. Please.

Why? If your car costs half as much for maintenence and insurance, what would 5mpg be to you?

Also, you can totally get 20mpg in a car like that, you just need to know how to tune the carbs (or go EFI w/good mapping). Under throttle of course, it would get much worse.

If you want some extra room, for it not to break down every 300 ft and don't mind FWD, 6 speed Maximas are deceptively fun. They can be found for 2500 on up depending on mileage.

A 2001 Chevrolet Metro sedan, or a Panther, or really anything that used to be a rental because everybody knows they are the fastest cars around!

Of course, you could always get a modded Civic with a Maxwell House exhaust and teh stickerz which add like 75 hp

my '76 Jeep Cherokee with 13mpg kind of soured me on my 50 mile daily commute. Holy cow I was filling it up all the time. Did a new 625 street demon carb and curved the distributor, but didn't hep much.

had a '95 civic hatch. Great car. Only reason I won't get a Honda again is they get stolen all the time.

yep. And LS v8's that get good gas mileage too. FWD wouldn't kill it for me though.

Mine is mostly stock, the only mod I have is BC coilovers.
Honestly, where I live, in a school zone area, it's all the power you need.
And with good tires, it's a damn fun rip on an autocross.

A little unrefined though, you have been warned (some, such as myself, call it raw).

Want fast and fun out of the box or would you prefer to spend ~2kish and dump the rest into tuning/goodies?

Anyway, 400+ hp on the cheap with the SAAB B234 engine, without opening it: http://www.saablink.net/forum/performa…

I would honestly go for a Quaife LSD before that much power, but to each his own. :)

While the 9000 is a 5-door, you could do something similar to the 9-5 model, which is a sedan. However, the 9-5 comes with the B235 engine which has lightened components for fuel efficiency and may not be as happy at high power. There are 4-door flavors of the 9000 as well, but they are a bit rare, and personally, I don't think they look that good: http://www.mynrma.com.au/media/saab_900…

If sleeper looks, turbo noises and good power is your kind of fun, this is one way to do it. For the RWD V8 stuff, there have been articles on oppo about pulling V8s out of vans, parting the vans and installing said V8s into vehicles of choice. For 5k, it's doable, but with elbow grease. :)

Yep, I've got a volvo 850 turbo wagon and just drove a Saab 9-5 wagon yesterday. Really liked it and agree it's very modable. If I get a 2nd swedish car, I'm thinking about a V70 turbo manual wagon, but I guess they're kind of rare. My friend owns the Swedish Solution in Cleveland, so I can get all the work done right and at a decent price.

The inconvenience of frequent fillups, that I can totally see as a problem.

Are you okay with FWD? Because there's some great FWD sports sedans around that price range (Acura TL, Infiniti I30, Maxima) that all go roughly 145mph. They'd be easier to live with than an M5.

But...

I can't find anything that's nearly as fast as an M5. It's just a question of maintenance and repair costs.

I Love the TL...always have. That's possible, but they really maintain value. Another guy brought up the Maxima and I think that's a pretty good option too. If I wanted to spend a bit more money, the 540I and cts-v's are getting down there too.

$2,950 - 76k miles on the LT1 V8 - it's a Goddamn wagon on top of that - holy shit why haven't you bought this already - if you don't I seriously might buy it

you should be able to find a v70R (manual + 300 hp). you're right they are uncommon in the US at least. Since you already have a 850 t-5? wagon, so you have practicality + fun DD covered. You could expand your search to any number of old/obscure rides if it will be a 2nd vehicle, like a amc eagle or B-body or miata if you want to get crazy you could find a Citroen or insert xxx awesome rare (in US but plenty common oversees) Euro car here.

Which reminds me of the Jaguar X-Type is a damn good suggestion too. It's basically a Ford Mondeo + you can find them with a 2.5 + manual trans (and rwd?) in the US though there is a design flaw (I think) with the shift tower bolt that can shear off and fuck up your transmission, though there's a former ford engineer that sells a conversion for 2-300 that fixes that (best as a preventative measure!).

Some bmw give the right mix of rwd + manual and can be reliable if you get the right model (525i or 540i seem to be best, though I've heard the 740i and (some 3 series of course) can be reliable too). All BMWs +97' and the coolant system has a bunch plastic parts which become regular maintenance to replace every 60-80K which is rather ridiculous

Maxima definitely a good choice. In general finding a fun capable car on the cheap, is like looking for good stocks. Search for the ones that have fell out of favor (general public) but are still damn good cars. Maxima fits in this catagory. Same for a bunch of others. Panther is another good recommendation. Lincoln LS / x-type / forster xt (lots of good subies - just watch out for rust) / older mercedes are fricken tanks, dead reliable and fun. The list goes on

e34 instead of e30 if you don't want to deal with fanboi price appreciation, and actually carry more tahn 2 people often... and if you can find one with bigger than the 2.5 and stick..
