In my first couple of days in Austin, I have noticed this about the car culture: It's a lot more varied than your usual big texas city. Hardly any trucks, more motorcycles, and a ton of Vintage German stuff. Also, it must be the capitol of Maserati GT's. Those things sound amazing in the low gears of city driving

I think Austin tries really hard not to be a typical big Texas city. That "Keep Austin Weird" Campaign really seemed to work. I know a couple people that moved there and they seem to enjoy the town.

Austin is a very educated, very liberal city. It's also got a lot of tech money. So no, not your typical Texas city.

Before you start classes, take a drive into Westlake. Some nice vehicles up in there.
Also, drive down Westlake Dr. from Bee Caves Rd (2244) all the way out to 360. Don't speed too much, because there's a lot of blind curves.
You'll see some nice cars, too.

yeah Austin is not very Texasy, not a big fan of that but oh well. A beautiful place for sure. Even if it's a place where many foreigners (non Texans) come together. I guess I like my Texas to be Texas not a west coast loft.

Austin is the odd egg of Texas.

What are you trying to say? I think there are a lot of smart people all over Texas. More so in the other big cities. And as for money, energy/oil trumps tech in Texas. I feel like your "educated people" comment was directly related to the vehicles around Austin. Basically that "dumb people drive trucks and us educated liberals drive vintage european cars". But it might just be me used to FP commentators all paranoid. Not trying to pick a fight, just trying figure out what you meant.

I was in Austin last week, and didn't notice too many cool cars. I felt like I saw more cool stuff in 2 hours in Annapolis than a week in Austin. That having been said, Austin definitely takes the lead for hipsters on scooters and idiots on motorcycles not wearing helmets.

That wasn't meant as a dig against anybody in Texas, I assure you, and I think you are reading way, way too much into my brief comment. With the flagship school of the UT System here, there are more people with advanced degrees than many, if not most, cities in TX. I'm an example of this; I came here for an advanced degree and stayed. But advanced degree equals educated, though not necessarily smart. So I'm not making any comparisons of intelligence.
Austin is a liberal city both in its political leanings and its way of life, but there are always exceptions. Spend a few minutes reading the comments in the Austin American-Statesman and you'll see what I mean. Energy/oil may trump tech in many parts of Texas, but not Austin. We're not pumping oil here, but we are pumping high tech. I see plenty of trucks here, of all descriptions, but I also see tons of 911s, many Teslas, Audis, and even a handful of Astons and Bentleys. I don't know how that ranks with other cities in TX. The only other TX city I'm in regularly is Abilene, and I have never seen a Tesla there. But I do see many, many trucks.

here in Houston, we are getting a surge of people from out of state, also engineers, architects, and so on to run all this oil biz. Huuuge giant warehouses are going up everywhere holding all things to do with energy. Multi billions of dollars worth of a building business. All related can be said about the t3ch boom.
As for the comment, I had enough with the context clues to come up with my decision, but I was reading too much into it. I guess I just like my Texas to be Texas.

I lived in Houston for three years in the early nineties and liked it very much. But it is a very different city than Austin.
