I am finding it less enjoyable to comment on kinja without images. I totally get that someone fucked it for the rest of us, but it is disappointing it has come to this

I can picture in my mind a world without war; a world without hate.
And I can picture us attacking it because they'd never see it coming.

Maybe the worst part is that whoever is doing all the trolling is probably loving this attention and effect that he is having.

Let me guess...it was a burner, right?

I know we're not supposed to post hate to the other gawker sites but serious question here - why couldn't jezebel and gawker jump ship onto their own site? They were the ones being harassed (mostly jez) so they could have their own ses of rules and whatnot for posting. Hell they could even implement a system that would keep the "burner" accounts but make it so you had to register an actual name and have X amount of rep or karma to post gifs and whatnot.
I guess what I'm asking is what benefit do each of these blogs get by being associate with kinja and gawker? Hell, *we* should spin off into our own. We have so many people tryingto form their own car blogs and we have half a million kinja sub blogs here.

This would be best demonstrated with with the addition of a exemplary Polandball comic.
Oh wait.
I can't post pics in the replies.

Nope. According to the people in charge, it wasn't. Throwaway Twitters.

Because then you would lose the ability to share. That's a huge part of what makes Kinja special. I can be on Oppo and Jezebel and ROYGBIV and Jalopnik and never leave the network. Never half to change logins or deal with multiple accounts...
And Kinja is entirely integrated. There is no way to just spin Jez off. You would have creat an all new system for the separated blogs.

Unfortunate situation. Possible that the only remedy is repetitive punching of troll faces.

Trust me if you saw what I have had to deal with for months as Jez writer...
I am not much of a crier. I certainly don't cry at the drop of a hat. One of my least feminine aspects, I guess. And I completely lost it it about two days ago. It all kind of caught up with me.
It's a small price to pay, even though I miss it too.

100% the reasoning behind the disabling of this feature is sound, but as they say, a picture is worth +/- a thousand words.
I know what was happening was heinous, to say the very least. An IP block would have been a much more effective workaround plus keep that gaggle of assholes that thinks this kind of crap is funny off commenting even without images.
I am sorry for the human race that there are certain people out there that find disgusting, threatening, demeaning, or being a dick to others is acceptable. Especially unprovoked. Sorry you had to deal with it Kat and others

The problem with an IP block is that would just send the trolls into using proxies and VPNs, and more than likely people would use really legit VPNs, getting a large number of people blocked with them. Certainly not an excuse for "do nothing", but it's a solution that has to be cautiously applied if at all.
The big vulnerability seems to be burners and twitter accounts, so this is the only good stopgap measure until they can work something more technical out without really gimping the service. This bites.

Yeah it really does. Is it really that fleeting a wish for everyone not to be a dick? Seriously, in all things it it more beneficial to be nice than a dick or an utter troll

The problem is that the most pathological people will always find ways to ruin things for the rest of us. The trick is preventing this kind of psychotic behaviour, but sadly we don't live in a society that will do that.
It's always the few manipulating systems and making it harder for everyone else. I wrote about this over on Groupthink, actually. It wasn't a terribly well-received point - I was replying to a stalker post bemoaning how stalkers make it difficult for people trying to handle emergency situations - but it relates to this problem particularly well.
We're having to make commenting more difficult and less functional in order to deal with someone's psychological problems. It's really in our faces here in the Gawkerverse at this point, but our entire society has many things get gimped entirely because of similar problems. Visitation rights in hospitals, or trying to manage the affairs of a loved one who is incapacitated, or getting a delivery job, or just helping a friend with whatever. You've got to provide piece of proof after piece of proof. It's a miracle I was able to call around about a friend's mortgage.
This is really no different. No matter what the technical solution is, eventually some jackass will find a way to manipulate it. The only thing we can do is try to set something up that makes it easier to deal with this kind of abuse, or at least something that makes it slower. I personally advocate a waiting period for twitter accounts and some additional burner control functionality that employees can use. I also just read a great idea about media being something that acts as a special privilege, I suppose to help the Bobsplosions of the Kinja world. Time will only tell.
