Entry-level German luxury saloons Edition
In this corner, we have the melty butt Mercedes CLA250.
And in this corner the "oh god are we sure it isn't an A4" Audi A3
Both start at 29,900.
Both have turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. The Benz making 208 horsepower, the Audi making 170 or 220 horsepower depending on which engine.
Both have available AWD. Quattro probably being a bit better than 4Matic.
Both have dual-clutch transmissions, the Audi's having 6 gears, the Benz having 7.
So, what we have here is a pretty even match, most of people's choices will probably come down to what badge they want.
Conclusion: I'd just say screw it to both and buy a Buick Regal GS AWD.

I'll go with the Regal as well.

Audi. All day. Every day. Next question.

When you say "29,900" & german, something completely different comes to mind.

Meh, I'd go with a S60.

A3 everyday haha
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:15 |

screw it is definitely the right choice, regal is also a very good choice. Are we allowed to go used?
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:15 |

I'll take the upcoming BMW 228i Gran Coupe.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:16 |

Quattro all the way.
In white.
I may be a bit biased.

Uhhhhh, sure.

THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER BETWEEN THESE TWO OPTIONS.

320i Sport. 6MT. Jalopnik Edition. All other answers are wrong.

Is that actually going to be a thing? Cool.
Even though, I don't know how well the Gran Coupe styling is gonna translate to a car that small.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:17 |
|
Why? Besides it being an Audi.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:17 |

Not a bad choice.

It was a joke, but I would absolutely not be surprised if that became a thing. And I think it could be pretty cool if they don't screw it up.

With BMW's current track record of "GRAN COUPE ALL THE COUPES" I'm shocked we haven't seen spy shots of one yet.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:24 |

Regal=Insignia=German.
...You're still buying german, what's the issue here?
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:25 |
|
I think the current Mercedes lineup, except the SLS, are all ugly.
I'd probably get the Regal, but I dig the Audi too.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:26 |
|
Okay so it's slightly more expensive, but whatever you're not paying 29,9 for the germans anyways

![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:27 |

Exactly why I chose the Regal.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:28 |

Since apparently rules don't apply other than being AWD and below $30k, screw your luxury and speed: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:28 |
|
So I'm not the only one who finds Benzes other than the SLS to be ugly. Good.
If the Audi was an S3, the choice would get a little tougher.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:30 |

I'd assume, bare minimum, about $35k or more for either of ze Germans.
Or, in other words, a 2.0T ATS with a couple options, if they're still doing the $3k rebate.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:32 |
|
You could choose the Verano and it would still be German, because Verano=Astra sedan.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:32 |
|
I would choose the Regal GS as well, but you know what? I'll take the FWD model over the AWD kind (what? are you crazy?). Because: Haldex AWD isn't that great, FWD is lighter, manual not available on AWD, and it's cheaper.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:35 |
|
So yes, ATS it is
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:44 |

Honestly, I hope the 228i GranCoupe DOES become a thing. As awesome as the 2-Series is, I don't know that I could ever forgo a rear set of doors. I don't particularly care if the back seats are spacious, but I'd like to have the extra accessibility to the back for the few times I do drive multiple people or when I have cumbersome crap to transport.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:44 |

I like the way you think

Regal GS by a million!
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:52 |

The SLS looks like pure sex, but otherwise, its been at least a decade since Merc made a decent looking vehicle.
An S3 would probably win over the Regal for me.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:52 |

Lovely AWD system, looks better than the Benz, I prefer the interior, moar power can be had, diesel can also be had. And it's an Audi.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 22:55 |
|
...that's a lorry.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:02 |
|
I'm aware. It also has a party function. Does the Audi or the Merc have that? No.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:05 |
|
Well, of the three... I've never really been a Mercedes person; I'm anti-Regal, owing to its unfortunate Vauxhall-ness, and the non-hatch A3 is incredibly off-putting, much like the Focus saloon—it just doesn't look right.
Sooooo... Uh... Titanium-trim Mondeo? (Ford of Europe, so German.)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm…
(Though, if I were actually buying, I'd get the estate, naturally.)
http://www.autoblog.nl/gallery/0_Beur…
(And, come to think of it, if non-saloons are in the running, I'd probably go back to the A3.)
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:05 |
|
Doesn't that just turn the subwoofer up?
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:11 |
|
Basically, but they at least thought it was a good idea to call it Party Mode.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:12 |

I just...I can't even...it doesn't...okay.

Damn, good point.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:21 |

Or you could buy a Corolla or more realistically a Focus. From a German perspective it's the same thing, the Focus is one of the main competitors of the Astra. An Opel is not a luxury car and in normal trim not a sporty car either, it's a middle of the road blue collar commuter box.

2009 Subaru Legacy Spec.B
More power than most of these, cheaper, more reliable, proper 6-speed, you don't need a master technician to do an oil change
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:33 |
|
It's a better all rounder than any of the above listed. Because space. And if a baddy is chasing you in a Cadillac, you can escape through any terrain.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:39 |
|
Why not choose a Humvee H1 then?
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:54 |
|
Because you can't find one with a Duramax for less than 30k. Plus the Toyota is more reliable and stealthy.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 23:59 |
|
Meh, better than most of them, but still not digging the looks.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 00:22 |
|
I know, but I thought we were making the criteria up.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 00:28 |

I was sticking to the AWD available, 200-300hp, and under 30k criteria.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 00:29 |
|
So...that was some of the criteria.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 07:49 |

If I had to pick between the Germans, I'd pick the A3. Even though I actually do love the CLA exterior. I think it's one of the best looking cars Merc sells.
However, it's garbage on the inside. You might as well not even have the back seats they're so worthless, and the interior is barely a step up from my Mazda.
However, you start throwing the Regal GS AWD into the mix....well I'm going with that.
