Buddies are all going to Canada tomorrow. My passport expired in 2012, I don't have an Enhanced Michigan License. Think I could get in/return with a birth certificate, expired passport, and license? Or will Canada kindly tell me no?

I'm assuming you're a filthy annexing Yank.
Canada has no problem letting you in; getting back is going to be the problem. Check with American border authorities.

Birth certificate and Photo ID should work.
/lives about an hour and a half from the border

I don't think they would let you through. And if they did, I don't think we would let you back...

You're not getting in. 10 years ago you probably could have gotten in, now I'm pretty sure you need a passport, passport card or enhanced drivers licence

I had an enhanced and I was fine, I think I had my birth certificate also.

Have you returned to the US with just a Bc and ID?

It wasn't necessarily me, but I was in the car with someone who did, and it was the other way around.

Two years ago I went into Canada on an expired Passport, granted it was by like a month, but they had no problem letting me in/didn't care. Getting back into the country the guy said my passport was expired but it didn't seem to bother him at all. However, I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you absolutely must. And if you do go and there are issues getting back into the country you technically can't be denied as long as you can prove that you're a US citizen

Forced immigration. Embrace the leaf or else!

This is not true anymore unless you are under the age of 16. You must have a valid passport, passport card or enhanced drivers licence

You need either passeport or an enhanced driver license... If you don't have any of those, forget about it.

A few years ago yes, things have gotten more strict recently.

Many years ago (5 or so I think), I tried getting into your county from Canada without a passport. I was with my father who said "Oh, it's ok. Your birth certificate/license is fine!"
The nice US border guard informed us otherwise, tossed a Nexus pamphlet at me and said to not let it happen again.
So, I would guess you might not be allowed in.

Don't bank on it.

Sorry man, you're SOL. No entry across the border sans valid passport. Works the same for us coming down there as well. Blame 9/11
