Sorry, couldn't help the lame pun. A fellow Michigan Jeeper is parting out an XJ, and is asking $100 for a Chrysler 8.25 rear axle (mine has a leaky D35). The catch? Shock mounts are cut off.

Cheap enough to be worth the extra hassle, or wait for something better to come along?

How much would it cost to weld on new shock mounts, compared to fixing your D35?

cut the mounts off the Dana35 and weld them on the eight and a quarter. Done. Is it for the front axle or the rear?

Rear. Just weighing how much of a pain it would be for my friends with the TiG welder, since I have no welding experience.

I have friends with a TiG welder, so probably just some of their time and patience and a 6 pack. I'm not too keen on fixing the D35 anyway.

May have just found your $100 answer?

Shock mounts are much easier to weld than rod/control arm mounts. 6 packs are cheap.

Stop inflicting your Swimchero ideas on everyone. Miata is always the answer, not Swimchero.

I'm stopping now before you or I mention the Ranger transfer case being run backwards to act as a PTO.

Just shock mounts? No worries then. That won't effect pinion angle or anything like that. People relocate shocks with bolt on shit all the time anyway, welding shouldn't be difficult.

Check the tag on the pumpkin to make sure that its geared the same as your front axle. They came with different ratios depending on the engine and transmission. Another thing to keep in mind is that any XJ with the 8.25 rear axle does not have ABS so if you have ABS you'll have to either live with the light lit up on your dash or do an ABS conversion, which would be a pain (the 8.25 wasn't designed for it).

I would also open up the pumpkin just to see how the gears look. If there's severe wear, just walk away. If everything checks out, shock mounts are easy to do, and cheap to have a local shop or friend do it. You can also take that time to mount the shocks more towards the wheel, which some people to to keep them out of the way of rocks.

If you have any more questions just let me know, lots of Jeep knowledge just waiting to pop out. I miss my Sheila :(

Is it the 27- or the 29-spline 8.25?

I had a 29-spline 8.25 in my XJ, and it was a tough axle. I ran 33s with a locker and never broke anything.

When I had 4.56 gears put in, my gear setup guru complained about how difficult it was to set up compared to a Dana rear end.

Shock mounts should be easy. If you cut the mounts off of your D35, you should be able to shorten them up a tad and weld them to the 8.25.

That said, I would expect it to be pretty straightforward to find a decent axle at a junkyard. I managed to snag an XJ Dana 44 from one of the local yards a few years ago. You're sure the gear ratio is correct, and the 8.25 isn't making any noise? If so, $100 seems like a good price for a known-good axle.

nope, $50

Not worth the hastle. But I'm now running a 9" in the rear because the housing was $100, ended up costing about $3K, I should have just ordered one from Currie for a few hundred more. but I had more money then.

You may be able to get discs from a Libby rear with abs? Not sure what else your looking to do. Make sure its 29 splines shafts.

Should be a 29 spline, and I'll have to ask the seller about the condition and gear ratio. Looks like he totaled it in a front end impact. I only have 31s and open diffs now, but planning on building it up once she's relieved of DD duties next spring.
