Now before you all get your jock straps in a twist, let me explain why I do this. I'm not looking to cause trouble, or start a dispute. I'm sharing this because the problem they're having is a problem that affects all of us, and I think we need to lend our voices and our support. For the past few months some asshole with no life and too much free time has been harassing the Jezebel site by indiscriminately posting graphic, violent gifs. This waste of life has been posting them in everything from articles about controversial topics to inspiring stories to simple squee posts that were supposed to be about corgis and red pandas. The Jezebel authors, of course, delete the posts and ban the account as quickly as they can, but the person just creates a new burner account and picks up where he left off. This routine has been going on for months for one simple, stupid reason. Gawker has, thus far, refused to create the ability to record or block IP addresses.
So why should you care? You don't go to Jezebel. Well first off even if you never visit Jezebel you should agree shit like this needs to stop. But moreover you should lend this issue your support because this isn't just a Jezebel problem, this is an everyone problem. Some may remember a few months back when a troll targeted our on Mkolabin and spent a couple days harassing him right here on Oppo. We Oppo mods had to ban about five different accounts, and worst of all because we couldn't stop the troll from creating new burners we had to be reactive instead of proactive and just hope he'd eventually get bored and move on (which he eventually did). What happened to Mkolabin could happen to any of us, what's happening in Jezebel could just as easily happen in Oppo. With the increased frequency of shares of Oppo articles to the front page and the ever-growing notoriety of our wonderful little space comes the increased risk that one of us (or all of us) will become a target. (Side note: being able to block IP's could also cut down on the spam).
I will be keeping my eye on the Jezebel post. You're all welcome to lend your voices to the discussion over there (even if you happen to disagree with some/all of what is being said, you're welcome to your opinion), but if I see anyone actively and deliberately trolling you will be immediately booted from Oppo.
