Not sure! I know the military sometimes practices landing and takeoff on roads in Sweden, not sure about USA.

During the Cold War the USAF, RAF, and Luftwaffe bases through out Germany were primary targets for Soviet airstrikes. The Autobahn proved to be perfect auxiliary airfields. There's lots of pictures rolling around of A-10s, F-16s, and even F-15s on highway airstrips. I would have mentioned the Harrier as well, but that's obvious.

Looks like the same spot! I hadn't forgotten about the Germans doing this but I guess I thought the Americans just used the bases.
