Basically anything before the Murcielago was awesome. Anything after is just kind of lukewarm. Plus they all sound terrible now.
Seriously, you could buy something that sounded like this. . .
I am not sure what happened, but I really really like the old ones, but the new ones. . . not so much. Not even the 875 to 950hp super crazy hybrids. They are interesting but not cool.
I blame lack of manual.
What's your guys' thoughts? You could call it growing up, but I want to make a 1UZ swapped 240sx. . . not exactly a very grown up thought.

The only supercar that really does anything for me right now is the R8
Basically anything else is just... meh.
The F430 is where my interest piqued. And I still want one, even over the 458.

Blame the Veyron. It started the "It can sound like shit and have no soul, but people will buy it because it costs a lot and it is fast." movement.

I usually don't go with the whole "soul" thing, but I agree here, something is missing and I can't quite put my finger on it.
They should build another old school supercar. Steel tubular space frame, manual, V12, mid-engined. Boom done and done. I bet the car would be AMAZING!

Yeah I am about the same, interest peaked at the Murcielago(even some of the cars coming out when it was out I felt meh about like the MP4-12C). There was just something so badass about it. I feel as though TVR made some of the more supercary cars. . . even though they weren't supercars.

I fell in. Love with this car as a kid. To me Nothing will be better.
You are right that everything nanny that brought on in the 2000's dumbed down the rawness of a supercar.

Maybe supercars just aren't special anymore? I mean, it's all just a game of "who's got the most horsepower and fastest Nurburgring time, oh and the most computers" now.

Best supercar reporting.

Quad turbo V12, is ALWAYS going to be awesome. Plus dat sound.
I think they toned it down for it to be more friendly to drive for everyone. Screw that, make it easy for skilled drivers I say! You graduate up to supercars not have it be your starting point!

Yeah number games get boring, but then again I think the Venom GT was badass, so they must have done something right.

I don't know what it is but I've kind of struggled with the idea of supercars forever. I mean I've always liked them a little but they all kind of bored me. The only ones I ever really liked were the just terribly beautiful ones like the Miura and the 250.
Although to be fair I blame John Hughes for my love of the 250 more than anything else.

I really really love the 250 series of Ferraris. Even the fake 250s like the 250lm! It was actually a 3.3L!!! This video really helps explain it I think!

I sort of agree, even though I have never been a particular fan of supercars. I'm more of a Sedan guy. I think Supercars have become boring because they are too easy to drive nowadays. Back in the days of the Miura/ Countach, they were ridiculously fast, ridiculously undrivable beasts that tried to kill you all the time. That was part of their fascination and appeal. Today they are as easy to drive as your average family sedan. I believe that also started the Hypercar wars. With Supercars becoming less appealing, manufacturers needed a new way to give 10 year old boys wet dreams about their cars. Which is why they started aiming for all the records.

I think the only downgrades in sound are the McLaren F1 (I know it's a BMW engine) to the McLaren V8's, although I rather like the sound but it's definitely worse than the V12 and the 360/430 to the 458 (Yeah, I said that). I think we need more of the big companies to go back to manual and simplicity, sort of like the 4C (I know this doesn't have a manual). I prefer the sound of a car that shifts slowly like cars that have a manual compared to the AMG cars where there is no pause due to the DCT transmission.

No, I agree the 458 just doesn't sound good. It sounds like I could take it on in a fight no problem. . . and I don't even work out. And ain't nothing wrong with a BMW V12, same engine was used in the BMW Le Mans racer!

Whoops! I meant the V12 is better, unless you thought the other way around.

No no, I understood you. You did say "I know it is a BMW engine" and there is nothing wrong with that. Not every supercar needs a bespoke engine!

Sorry, I've had barely any sleep since getting my wisdom teeth removed and staying up for 17 hours isn't really helping.

I've never liked the stock F430. Now this on the other hand -
I'd buy one of these over any other Ferrari at this price point (~$240K)

I see your point, but at the very least, the 458 Spider does sound glorious. Never cared much for the normal 458 but God, the Spider is sensational.

I disagree. Looking back at the hypercars of the early 2000s I just feel disappointed. Compared to the cars before them they went backwards in terms of progress especially when you consider cars like the 458 and 12c eclipse them on performance. Plus the new trio of hypercars really pushed things forwards something the last generation really didn't do. So yeah I disagree, things are better now.

the last Ferrari I really liked was the F430 Scuderia. Everything else seems (or so it would seem since I'll never drive any of them) more digital.
I am wondering about the manual thing since so many manufacturers are dropping them, sales must be about to rise for the few that keep the manual.
I know when I get around to finally owning a supercar (no doubt it will probably be used), I will want it to have a manual but I may ditch it for the rest of the car as a whole, which is what I assume the manual-loving-supercar-able are currently doing.
Lamborghini has gone a bit soft with their new gen. I would definitely have a used (and the cheaper cost is also factoring in to this opinion) murcialago over the new Aventador.
I would agree that the manuals are dying so that the manufacturers can put up better 0-60 stats, more gears, etc. and I think that is a shame, and a 0-60 won't be the thing that makes me choose one over the other, unless it's a real big difference (like > 1 second).
It especially shames me that Aston is dropping the manual. And it looks like my first an only supercar will end up being a recent Vantage.

Might be wrong here but I attribute part of it to the lower power levels and performance of everyday cars back then and the law of diminishing returns now.
Hear me out:
Back when a household car had, say, 140-180hp driving something with 450 or 550 on the street seemed astounding. You can tell a 140hp car is slow putting around down and merging on the highway. The gap between slow and fast is noticeable.
These days a lot of everyday, attainable cars are 300-400hp and it seems like even that is more that you realistically "NEED". My past cars were in that range and I always had a lot of power in reserve. Having another 200hp is great for the track and for a backroad blast but other than that it's just even more power I have little use for.
Plus now you can get a good suspension, brakes, and so forth in addition to the horsepower in an everyday car. Might not be ultra high zoot brake rotors made out of unnilquadium but it will be more than enough for an amateur driver or semi-pro to enjoy.

Well yeah there are the hyper cars (One:1 and P1 and 918 for me), but now my interests consist of Speedhunters project cars and older stuff.

I've still got a 1:18 scale model of this thing that I was gifted with when I was a child. Played with it all the time but didn't break anything... No Matchbox-like abuse for this beauty. Until today I'm very fond of this car's overall look.

Sans steel space frame, you can still buy everything you described. The Zonda is still being made.

Have you seen EVO's Analogue Supercars video? One of their best ever.
