If I flog this car without mercy I get 30mpg. If I hypermile I get 30mpg.

Depends, what are your hypermiling methods?

If you do it the "wrong" way, you won't be saving any fuel at all...

My Corolla was similar, excpet 42MPG.....

I loved that little car...

Slammed on its ass, loud as all hell, and still got 40+MPG whether I was WOT all day or really tried to behave myself.

30mpg for that seems low. I bet something is going on beyond just being a shitty car. Check ericthecarguy on Youtube for his performance video stuff. here ya go!
