Many US Service Members are stationed overseas every year. Be it Japan, Korea, Germany, or any of many places worldwide, someday they return back to the US. Service members are allowed to ship their vehicles back to the US, one vehicle per household being shipped free by Uncle Sam.

Kinja'd!!!

The vehicles get dropped off at their country of origin, and then... Who knows!

The current company in charge of shipping cars belonging to military members, International Auto Logistics, has been highly incompetent in delivering cars in the United States. Some service members have had their cars severely delayed, others have had their cars lost. Yes, that's right: the company has no clue where their cars are. Insurance companies like USAA are advising their customers to report the cars as stolen.

Congress is starting to look into this mess, but this might be something Jalopnik might want to write about too...

I've always wondered this: Can a military serviceman or woman purchase something like, let's say an RS6, while overseas, and be able to ship it back and legally drive it?

No we cannot. It would still have to meet the 25 year rule for importation, I looked into buying an R32 Skyline but it wouldn't be of age by the time I leave here.

It also take forever for the cars to get over here, I waited 3 months and whenever I tried to contact the company they couldn't give me any info on where my FiST was.

I've heard of people stationed in Japan who ran into this problem. Even when it was a car that they also made in the US, because of the difference in safety regs if it wasn't over 25 years it wasn't worth the legal paperwork of importation, so they had to sell it before coming home.

I've never had any long delays or major issues when I shipped with them. Used them three different times, though the last time was in 2008. However, I've found candy wrappers dumped in my car back in 2004. Other one was somebody broke the t-coupling for my boost gauge on connected it wrong so I was sucking in outside air past the MAF.

I've heard of servicemen being able to bring them over temporarily. A guy who once posted a foreign car spot from Virginia said there's indeed some foreign car sightings in town near a base in Virginia. Edit: here's that car spot http://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comment…

In 2008 it was a completely different company. It used to be American Auto Logistics, and their service was great, In 2011 they lost the contract to International Auto Logistics, a much smaller company. When they bid for the contract there were doubts that the smaller company would be able to take over the contract without a hitch, and Congress was assured they would. Now, however, they have proven that they are not capable of delivering thousands of cars coming from varied locations overseas.

a couple of my friends just got stationed in Germany and I've been watching their horror stories on unfold on Facebook. Hopefully it's a different company when/if we ever get our orders overseas

Shipping a car isn't that expensive on the civilian market. You can move a car from Germany to Baltimore for less than $1200. I am seriously considering paying for my car's shipping if by the time I DEROS next year this fiasco is still going on.

Foreign military who live in the US for less than three years are allowed to bring their foreign cars and register them here. Those are not US service members. Our shipping company will not even look at your vehicle if it is less then 25 years old and not US Spec.

you're right. I looked into it for a Focus ST I had at the time but chose to sell it instead.
