So my best friend is trying to sell his pickup for 17K, wants to buy an 05 or newer Mustang with a Manual.
This is the same friend that rolled an Cobb-Tuned STi off a cliff with me in it. Now he wants "Straight Line speed". Any suggestions on cars?

Nice truck, but I had no idea that those sold for 17k.

I've often found the cost of Toyota Pickups to be outrageous. He paid nearly that much for it from the dealer USED, but has since put thousands worth of parts into it.

17k seems very crack pipe to me. What constitutes that value here?

"This is the same friend that rolled an Cobb-Tuned STi off a cliff with me in it. Now he wants "Straight Line speed"."

May I suggest a bicycle. Or some kind of moped perhaps?

Damn sir, that is in FINE machine! Not too sure about the $17,500 for an 01 with 151k. I'm looking at it as more of a $9k-$11.5k absolute max

Your friend sucks at driving. This should do the trick.

It's a brand-new engine though, and Toyota. I've seen lesser Tacoma's go for the same price... That was my thought too.

Oddly enough, he had a driving course planned for the following week. Downhill off-camber right-hand turn, slides at 90 MPH, brakes, then counter steers. I thought we were going to die.

Toyota pickups carry an inflated value here in Redneck California, where everyone knows they last forever. Plus the TRD badge is worth the same weight as an M badge to offroad people. Its got assloads of cash spent in suspension and bumper.

An unmolested one couldnt be had for less than 12k.

It's a nice vehicle, but it's just not worth 17k to me.

I have a feeling that it might take a while to sell. Personally, I'd buy a classic muscle car if I managed to get ~17k out of the truck and wanted straight-line speed.

You could get a nice Cutlass, Gran Torino or a LeMans or ElCamino at that price (at least where I live)

$17k? I can get an 06 Tundra with half the mileage for that price, sorry but that's a CP for me.

Yup, dont blame you. Although the "Truck" people would curse the idea of owning a Tundra...

I'm just trying to understand your logic in making the leap from "this guy got overconfident and rolled a car in which I was a passenger," to "I'm going to help him find another fast car."

i'm sure he can find a buyer but it's not priced to sell quickly. The customer is out there though for sure, it's such a clean ride!

Age 17 to age 20 is a long time. 300HP isn't the same as 525HP and no experience.

Kinja'd!!!1

So let me get this straight.

Some idiot gave a 17 year old kid a 525 hp STi. Which the 17 year old rolled, because what else would he do?

Now, this kid is 20, with "more experience," wants to get another fast car.

When I was 20, I thought I was a fancy driver when I taught myself how to heel-toe. I was not actually a fancy driver.

Allow me to give you the benefit of my experience, and say, in the history of dumbass fucking ideas, this is a dumbass fucking idea.

Please show me where I said it was a good idea?

What's the best way to learn? Make mistakes. Drive like a d-bag=almost die.

Needless to say, I won't ride with him when/if he changes vehicles.

Engine a factory replacement? If so he should mention that or who built it. If it's a Jasper or something leave that off. LOL.

Priced way too high. My sister had an '03 taco and it took forever to sell. She did finally get rid of it at $10,500. But we originally were asking $13,000 for but knew we'd be talked down. The TRD 4x4's hold their value, but he is stupid and trying to get his money back from what he put into it. You never get money back when you mod a vehicle. Also the fact that it has a new engine may be what will scare people off, why did it get a new motor? Did he not do the timing belt and have it snap and chew up the valvetrain? Really his truck is about a $13,000 truck at best but more closer to $11,000.

I think it's a same-year block rebuilt by a local company.

No, but going 90 when there's the risk of going of a cliff with you in the car kinda lands him in bad steads with me.

Valid, but worth pointing out those don't have the (waste of money) bumper or a new engine.

Id tend to agree on all of what you've said.

He drove his truck through a "puddle", sucked water into the engine.

#4 has a new engine, and a bumper isn't $8k

For what it's worth I've always done the best selling rebuilt cars, engines, and transmissions with the most amount of documentation. There's always the doubt about what's actually in there and a build sheet can help get top dollar.

JMHO.

Oh absolutely, I won't say it was a poor decision. We've all done stupid shit though, and if we made decisions based on mistakes we've made, nobody would have friends, and life would be boring.

In fairness cliff may be an exaggeration. Probably a 20 meter drop.

For that to have happened he must have tried to ford a damn river. They suck air from about the same height as the headlamps. And with that knowledge I'd be scared of any wiring issues and would basically treat it as a flood damaged vehicle. Yeah that truck just lost couple more grand in my mind. I would stay well clear of this truck, even though it is a unicorn of a taco being the v6, 4x4 with a manual.

I wasn't present when it occurred, but it was before he had it lifted, and he had only submerged the engine bay, not the cab.

It was also rewired when he got the lights and such.

You're asking for car suggestions on his behalf. Which, maybe you wouldn't be doing if you were more opposed to the idea of him having a fast car again.

I also strongly disagree that rolling a car after driving like a fuckwad is not the best way to learn how to be a good driver. Because if he had actually learned something, he wouldn't be talking to you about how he wants something with "straight line speed."
