I'm trying to translate something into Old Norse and am having the hardest time due to the grammar differences between the two languages. If anyone here knows now to translate English to Old Norse properly, or knows someone who does, could you try and see if this can be translated to Old Norse:

One for sorrow,Two for joy,Three for a girl,Four for a boy,Five for silver,Six for gold,Seven for a secret,Never to be told.

For anyone wondering, it's for my first tattoo, which I want in Old Norse grammar, in the Old Futhark alphabet, with the silhouette of a crow outlining it.

A norse is a norse, of course of course, and no one can talk to a norse, of course - that is, of course, unless that norse is the famous Erik Red.

Go right to the source and ask the norse, he'll give you in answer invading force - his longships on a steady course, talk to Erik Red!

Saxons yakkity-yak a streak, and waste your time with lays - but Mr. Red will never sing, unless he has someone to slay...

A norse is a norse, of course of course, and this one will war till the monks are scorched - you never heard of a Greenland horse? Well, listen to this -

hateka Eiríkr hinn rauđi !

Oh.. this won't be easy.. I could easily translate it to Norwegian, and probably from Norwegian to Old Norse, HOWEVER.. from Old Norse written in modern letters and to Futhark, not sure I'd even wanna try if I'm honest.

Just get it into Old Norse into modern letters. I'll work at getting it into Old Futhark.

I'm weird in that I'm fluent in Old Futhark script and alphabets, but not Old Norse. XD

Heh! By the picture, It appears nobody is happy drinking Brigg. Especially that short one on the left. He has to be mad or about to cry.

I can try, the problem is that there are four or five words just for the word Sorrow, and there's the problem with eastern or western old norse (I'm guessing Old Gutnish is not what you want).

Why would they be happy, it tastes like nothing, and there's hardly any alcohol in it at all.

For 'sorrow', I used "harmr", since that seem most accurate to the concept.

Also, therein lies another issue:

I'm Anglo-Scott-Irish. The Irish origin is pretty simple, but the actual distribution of Scottish in relation to the Viking bloodline is more convoluted.

The people of my original Scottish clan split when the clan was beaten and taken over by a rival clan. Some went south to England, only to be raided, interbred, and resettled by Scandinavian Vikings from Denmark. Many others of the clan stayed in the north-west of Scotland, only to be raided, interbred, and resettled by Icelandic Vikings. Generations later, the northern Scots descended from the merged Viking/Scot bloodlines emigrated to Ireland and the across to America much later to become the Irish side of my family. The Scots who went South stayed in England on the east coast, before making their way to America to become the Scottish side of my family. The two sides merged when my great great grandparents met and married.

So I have Viking lineage on both sides. However, the English/Scottish side is less convoluted and I guess therefore more 'pure', so I imagine that it'd be more appropriate to use the form of Old Norse used by the Danish Vikings than the Icelandic ones, if that helps.

Ahh, uhm, it actually makes it harder for me :P I'm Norwegian, but do understand some (quite a lot actually) of Icelandic, but Faroese ain't that hard either. The thing is, I've been trying since you posted this now and I'm not really happy with the result. I know I can do it, but it'd take me quite some time. I'd say your best bet would be to contact the university on the Faroe Islands or on Iceland and ask them for help.

So far I've only managed to translate it to Icelandic (of sorts).

The main problem with this is that no one actually speaks Old Norse anymore, nor do anyone REALLY know how accurate we're able to translate Futhark. I REALLY don't want you to end up with a Tattoo thats gibberish at the best or down right offensive at the worst.

Here's the somewhat Icelandic translation so far... (I'm self taught, by no means fluent)

Einn fyrir harmi,

Tveir af gleđi,

Ţrír fyrir stelpu,

Fjórir fyrir strák,

Fimm fyrir silfur,

Sex fyrir gulliđ (not sure if it should be gulli or gulliđ)

Sjö til leyndarmál,

Aldrei ađ segja.

Sorry, most of them went to the Boneyard in 2009. NASA has a couple, though.

Just translate according to whichever is the easiest route for you, haha. Also, as far as Old Futhark is concerned, don't worry about it too much. I'll be translating it myself phonetically, since the original poem is meant to be spoken aloud anyway.

I'll see what I can do, I've contacted a friend in Iceland now. But for the love of god, you must remind me of this in a few days, I tend to forget stuff quite easily.

Have not heard back from my friend yet (well, I have, but he had to go on a trip to Germany), hopefully we'll be able to have an answer for you this week. I'm sure there are people who could've done this much faster, but I want to make sure we get this right.

Hey man, it's been a while. Had any luck? If not, it's fine. Take your time- I'm not in a huge rush.

Also, since we're add it, could this be translated as well?

"These hands can create life.

These hands can destroy life.

What do I want these hands to do?"
