My theory is this guys owned the trailer as his car.

She was his baby, his pride and joy, hobby, no, his life. But sadly her life was cut short. Tragically, one day, a teenage girl ran a stoplight and he t boned her Golf, and destroyed the front end of his beloved B5 Passat. Mr. VagFan4Life was crushed, his baby had been taken from him. However he resolved that her legacy would live on. He bought another and modified it in exactly the same way.

Then one day while sitting in the "not quite the same" new Passat in his drive way, staring at he remains of his true beloved, whom he had not yet summoned the strength to scrap, he had an idea. He would turn his old girl into a trailer so she could still come to shows, still be there for the adventures, still be... around. ... and so the VW Passtrailer was born.
