In a hand-washing, sanitizer-carrying culture, why is it acceptable to lick one's finger before separating a sheet of paper to hand it to someone?
By this I mean when someone licks their finger to better grip a sheet at the top of a stack of paper to more easily separate it from the others?
And here is yet another post of yowen, spaghetti and meatballs, wondering why in the hell something is the way it is. I spend a lot of time on a daily basis wondering about these menial things.

At work we have this:

Tell me a better way to do it in the same amount of time, without having to buy something.
You can't. That's why.

Yeah! I had one of those at my last job when I needed to sort a LOT of paper due to part of the corporation still being on a antiquated ERP system.

I usually piss on my hand to split the pages. It's more sterile.

Just don't lick it! Lol. This happened to me today because someone had to hand me a post-it note, I NEVER have trouble separating the top post-it note from its friends.

You have magic fingers. Not everyone can be so lucky.

Why do people love to let their dogs spit all over their faces (related) but scowl at you when you let one rip in open air, outdoors?

I've seen people lick their finger before turning page of magazine in doctors' waiting rooms. I will not read magazines there.

Forsure. Totally understandable.

I always wondered too!
Aside from the germs, is it really THAT hard to separate a piece of paper without licking your finger first?
Seems pretty damn easy to me. Unless your handling paper all day (in which case use the tub of goo that Diesel posted) you don't need to lick your finger for extra traction. Licking your finger seems as unnecessary as putting a giant wing on the back of an Accord.

I am convinced that 97.5% of people can learn this skill, I am convinced that 100% of people at my work can learn this skill.

I think the grossest part of that whole scenario is that, that person is taking that dirty ass finger that they have been using to sort nasty papers and then licking it.

ewww, ewwww, ewww.

Yeah, it generally is unneccessary, unless you need to do mass amounts of sorting, which I used to have to do at my previous job, but I didn't lick my finger, because that would also cause me to ingest mass amounts of ink. I used a sponge thingy.

Agreed, I've brought some paperwork into my superiors office during his lunch break. Lick, Flip, Lick, Flip, Lick Flip. Then he hands the papers back to me, nice and wet. Euuuchhh.

Nope, you're wrong. There's a reason that some guy somewhere is sitting on a pile of money all from selling these (they are page-turners, not sex toys):

oooh oooh oooh! That is, in fact, what I used, I never used the goo or sponge or anything, this is what I used when i sorted paper, I forgot about those finger condoms, lol.

Is it really that bad? Most people are fine letting their dogs slobber all over their faces. I certainly don't lick dingleberries off my bunghole, and one small lick will get me through a good number of page flips. Suck it up, and buy some Germ-X if it bothers you that much.

I thought this is what everyone did...

Shit, everyone knows you're supposed to just lick the pages. Who knows where your fingers have been.

Yeah! Why is it socially acceptable for a dog to sniff someone's crotch but it's not socially acceptable for... wait, I may see where I have gone wrong...

I've honestly never had an difficulty separating pages, it always perplexed me why people licked their fingers.

I'm no germophobe, but it just flabbergasts me that people think this is an OK thing to do, considering what all else society thinks is not OK that practically has the same implications.
Like I mentioned in my post, sometimes i just like to discuss/think about menial things, things of no consequence.

I think it's just a common thing, and always has been.
I only noticed the "hand sanitizer on every wall" trend after the H1N1 scare a few years ago.

Yeah, I fucking hate hand sanitizer, makes my hands itch and I don't like the smell, so I avoid it almost always. Just wash my hands instead.
I think there is such a thing as being too clean too.

In high school, they put those things in every classroom. It just became part of my routine to hit them every time I entered/exited.
I think I was addicted to hand sanitizer.

It isn't. But, just sanitize after you're done handling the paper yourself.
