As I promised better quality pictures!
Note I did switch lenses between the first two and the last two. First two are with the 35 and others are 55-200

Whoever's in the back looks like they're wearing a skirt.
VA class, with the photonics masts up only, from the looks of it.

Ah, I was conceived there.

My Dad was born there. My grandfather served there in the 70's

My dad served there before moving to Bremerton, Washington where I was born. My dad served on two nuclear subs.

My grandfather was on two also, both out of Groton. The Trepang and the Lipscomb.

My dad served on the George Washington and the George Bancroft. If I recall correctly the George Bancroft was a diesel sub that was converted to a nuclear sub and the George Washington was a nuclear sub outright.

Yeah the GW was a nuke missile sub, not sure about the Bancroft though. Submarines are very, very interesting.

Yeah, it appears that way to me.

Yeah I thought about serving sub duty (wife can't get jealous if you serve with a bunch of dudes) and then I read
Big Red
and while there were a bunch of things to discourage me the #1 was the lack of communication with family. You get a two sentence telegram that you can not respond to once every 3 months.
"Jimmy fell out of the tree and broke his arm. We miss you." I would lose my mind.

I've thought about, even still am. Right now I'm thinking of three possibilities, Coast Guard, Sub Service, or college. Haven't really decided on what I am going to do. Have about 2 years to figure it out though.

Read Big Red, it was an eye opener for me. If I didn't have a wife at the time and kids now I would've done sub service. You work two 8 hour shifts doing two different jobs every day that way if something happens to someone somebody else knows how to do their job. I would have been fine with that and a lot of the other stresses but not being able to keep in touch with my wife or kids would've been too much. My dad said he would never serve on a surface ship because there are so many lazy people that others are just doing the work for them picking up the slack.
Consider an aircraft carrier has a crew of 4,000 and a sub has a crew of 160 and you get a feel for how many sailors are there just to make sure somebody is working. My dad said if people pulled half the crap they do on surface ships on a sub they'd kick them off.

I haven't read that book but I've read some other stuff and seen some other stuff so I know how a lot of it works. It works best if you don't really have a family. That's the main reason my grandfather got out, was away too much. I'd still love to do it. I wouldn't want to be on a surface ship in the Navy either.

Yeah I watched that carrier documentary and was shocked at how out of line some of the crew was.

Which documentary was that? I've seen some sub ones but not much on carriers.
