Had a picture of the front, deleted it because my phones "share file" and "delete file" buttons are tiny and close together :(

That's actually what one of the other coaches said.
"There's no way that's a 2002. That's like 80's"

Yeah, but there weren't many cars in the lot, and everyone parked in the lot knew whose car it was, and that it's his baby, so we all just kinda let it go.

I never understood why BMW used to mount the exhaust so close to the center.

I'd like to say "Boat Tail" Affect, where it creates a difference in pressure that helps with down-force. Unfortunately that's not an applicable answer in this case.

Heard these way to many times. (Note: more than once is discouraging)

For these years, it's more towards the right. It's probably an aftermarket exhaust. Though, the later 2002s (square lights) the exhaust is from the center. Here's a picture to show center vs stock position for mine.

That's when you really start messing with them
"Late 60's to 70's, actually. That's when BMW invented time travel. "

Some early exhaust sound regulations were tested by placing a meter 'at the rear corner of the car nearest the exhaust'. By putting it in the middle they had a slightly larger design space. I have no idea if BMW did it for that reason, but I've read articles about other cars that did.
