I think it's this one. 3.0L Porsche 944S2 and 968
Anything bigger?
Also, how does one get their engine looking so shiny and clean like this?

Pontiac had a 3.2L 4cyl back in the 60's. It's what happens when you take a 389 and chop it in half. LOL. There might be an early 1900's car that has one that's bigger still.

The Pontiac Tempest had a 3.2L inline 4 in the 60's, according to Wikipedia.

Gas only?
cause there are some big ass 4 pot diesels.

The Fiat s76 used a 28 litre four cylinder. I think that wins.

As long as we only count cars than you might be right.

Not that.

Funny I was going to bring up the Toyota 15B (in the mega cruiser) but then it was gas only)

To get an engine bay that clean is a simple formula: an arsenal of cleaning products, time, and lots and lots of elbow grease.

Do you think the top end could be done without dropping the engine?
![]() 07/22/2014 at 18:26 |

That would appear to be a starting handle on the front.
Any man who would hand crank a 28.5 litre engine must have had gentlemen's equipment as big as melons.

Mass produced, I'd say the Model A's as they were all 201's. so that's 3.3 litres.

probably producing less hp than a smart car

Nope 300 hp!
![]() 07/22/2014 at 18:30 |

you could certainly disassemble the top end, clean each part, and then button the engine back up.
![]() 07/22/2014 at 18:38 |

still 300hp out of a 28 liter engine. I love these old engines but man have we come a long way

Blower Bentleys were 4.5L. There are several other prewar cars that eclipse that number.

There were some early 20th century cars with giant 4-cylinders, primarily for racing purposes.
The Fiat Tipo 55 displaced a whopping 9 liters.

Not sure about big 4 cylinders, but you get an engine that clean by not installing it.

What was the torque?

And then, I presume, never actually starting it up.

300 horsepower going through that exposed chain, with line of sight to that dude's face... Yikes.

Or- buy all new engine parts, build a engine, never ever put any fluids in it, and never touch it.

Swiped from wikipedia:
"One of the largest inline-four engines is the MAN B&W 4K90 marine engine. This two-stroke turbo-diesel has a giant displacement of 6,489 L. This results from a massive 0.9 meter bore and 2.5 meter stroke. The 4K90 engine develops 18,280 kW (24,854 PS; 24,514 hp) at 94 rpm and weighs 787 tons."
