That's a Howmet TX. I have witnessed one of these in action and it sounded very intersting.

I was. But I hope that I will have another opportunity to hear a Howmet in action.

Fantastic.
I wish prototype racers were allowed to be as innovative as the Howmet TX, now... the rules are so micromanaging, that I can't imagine that this sort of thing could be done again...
gas turbine with a mild hybrid electric drivetrain for low-speed maneuvering and reverse, and then direct-drive at high speed, would be interesting.
It is also interesting that the turbine engine had two exhaust outlets, and the third was the waste-gate... basically a turboshaft variable bypass... the turbine could remain spun up to it's naturally high RPM, and the waste-gate would lower the power output, without dropping the RPMs... since turbines don't throttle up or down as quickly as piston engines do.
