As cool as Giant robots sound on paper, I just can't get over the "may not make sense from an engineering perspective" part. There's no way an actual, real mech wouldn't get its ass handed to it by a fighter jet, I mean, imagine you are a guy with a rifle and sword trying to fend off a fly, now imagine that fly can go as fast as the speed of sound, as high as Kurt Cobain on a good day and fire guided missiles from so far away you wouldn't even be able to see it. And I'm not even gonna talk about how they give robots hands, instead of just attaching weaponry to it, or feet instead of tracks, or how they have head shaped cockpits that can be easily separated from the rest of the body...

Gurren Lagan, that mech threw galaxies like shuriken.

Also, the Eva survived atomic strikes (but had limited battery life, range anxiety FTL). The Eva also threw a spear into orbit, sword fighting with a container ship is one thing, but the Eva definitely have the power advantage.

Even without an AT field the Eva would win, speed, maneuverability, and absolute power output are all on their side.

hell , I'm sure you wouldn't even need jets , realistically . artillery should do the trick . and I'm with you , never understood the need to give them hands , feet , heads , etc .
