For those that didnt hear about it yet, both mercs changed their rear brakes in parc firme between qualifying and race.According to the rules, such changes to the car mean an automatic pitlane start. So how did they get away with it? By claiming that the replacement (different brand, more reliable) brake discs were the same size and weight, thus 'weren't a change in specification'.The pathetic stewards let them get away with it and the other teams went ballistic.... but no one is doing anything about it.Why? Because f1.No one stands up for right and wrong. No one stands up for themselves.Journalists are utterly useless.Teams are cowed by anything that might jepardize their massive payouts. It all just stinks :-(

Indycar took some liberties with rule enforcement as well this weekend.

Does anyone care about the goddamn rules!?

hamilton's brakes exploded, so if the other discs were from the same lot i'm definitely ok with it.

My understanding is that Rosberg's car were equipped with the Carbon Industries brakes all weekend, and Hamilton's car was equipped with Brembo's during qualifying. However, after Hamilton's brake exploded, they switched his car over to the Carbon Industries brakes. As you said, the CI brakes are the same size and weight as the Brembo brakes, so there was effectively no real change to his car that would warrant a pit-lane start.

Usually competitors will fail a complaint/protest if they think that rules have been broken. I think the change was made following this part from the regulations (I removed some text but you can find the rest of it easily):

" 34) POST QUALIFYING PARC FERMÉ

...

Between these times, other than when cars are returned to the parc fermé overnight, the

following work may be carried out :

...

long list of stuff

...

Any work not listed above may only be undertaken with the approval of the FIA technical delegate following a written request from the team concerned. It must be clear that any replacement part a team wishes to fit is similar in mass, inertia and function to the original. Any parts removed will be retained by the FIA.

However, if a team wishes to change a part during the qualifying session and/or on the grid before the start of the race, this may be done without first seeking the permission of the technical delegate, pro vided it is reasonable for the relevant team to believe permission would be given if there was time to ask and the broken or damaged part remains in full view of the scrutineer assigned to the car at all times."

I'm saying this as a Hamilton fan...but would kind of have the same attitude regardless. I like seeing cheating. Beating the system. Something. The sport is so over-regulated now that it's difficult to effectively push the limits. And teams do stand up for themselves, but the Troll shuts them down and makes threats against them when they do.

I heard something the other day, maybe it was on here, that Bernie may be thinking about selling some portion of his controlling stake off. That would be fine with most everyone I'm sure. He did a lot of good 30-40 years ago as far as safety and worldwide broadcasting is concerned, now he's just...Bernie.

NBC Sports Broadcast and pit lane reporter talked about it. I am not sure i realized Rosberg changed the part as well. I knew Hamilton had done so. If the part was the same size and weight I certainly don't feel like an advantage was gained (other than safety and reliability). I don't think it would have changed Hamilton's race at all if he had started from the pits. Obviously it would have changed Rosberg's race which for the sake of the title I would have been OK with. Would have been interesting to see if they could have won the race from the pit lane. Had Hamilton not had wing damage he would have passed Bottas. Either way in the grand scheme of things I don't think it changed the result. The Mercedes cars were strong enough to win from the pits.

...which is insane.

I think they should both have to start from the pits for the rest of the season - will make the races a lot more interesting!
