Am I the only one who really doesn't like the looks of the 918?

All Ws, Audis, and post-merger porsches look like silly puddy cars. It used to be cool when it was minimalist, but now it looks like a blobby bean with chrome and vents cut into it. The P1, by comparison, looks like the whole body is designed to flow in and around itself.

It's a bumble bee beetle hybrid!

It must be Supercar Saturday. I just snapped these pics 10 min ago. First time I've seen an F40 in person. Also first time I've seen a FerrariCeption in person.

I love the tech around this car. But the looks do suck, yes. P1 combines the tech and the looks into something that feels like a car. Modern day Porsches are boring(to my eye) and feel more like appliances than cars.

I think the P1 wins the supermodel contest this time around.

Maybe its the yellow. The 918 doesn't seem like a car that wears yellow, especially with the Weissach package, very well.

More subdued colours are a must with these Germans it seems.

Which is why the S65 AMG is offered with the same chromatic variety as a blue period Picasso.

(kidding, Picasso at least used red once in a while...)

German designs rarely hold up well in varied colours lately, its kinda bizarre.

I think thats a better testament to design, having a car that looks good over a range of paints instead of a car that only works in a few hues.

Darker, more muted colors show reflections and lines better, so it makes a blobby car appear more curvacious.

Brighter colors cause reflections to get lost in the color, which means that they look more spherical or rounded. If you take an already fat/blobby car with round edges and put a bright color on it, it will look like a flying saucer. This works great for smooth-edged cars like a Miata, but given that all german cars want GRRRR ANGRY CHROME all over them, it makes it look like a pincushion.

Kinja'd!!!1

The use of carbon also seems odd on the Weissach.

The CF doesn't seem "blended" or "a part of" the design. It just seems tacked on.

Unlike say, the P1 where it looks like it was made with bare carbon design in mind.

Don't mind at all

It was Ferrari Beverly Hills

I was in LA so I stopped by to see the F40. The FerrariCeption was a bonus as I didn't know it was there! I knew the F40 was because I saw it in their inventory list.

I asked how much the F40 was - $1.5M. It had less than 2000 original miles.

I swear I would buy it right now if I could. If I had that much equity in my house I'd sell it and buy this car. The way things are going I bet it will be worth $10M within 15 years...

Ha, Beverly Hills, can't say I'm surprised that they had that kind of inventory!

And I totally believe it, the value on those cars is going to keep going up, although 1.5 Mil seems a bit steep... Hopefully it goes to a home where it gets driven more, although 2000 miles might be a lot for an F40, seeing as how a couple of them for sale recently had less than 500...

It's so funny how Ferrari designs can grow on you. When the 458 came out I did not like it. I liked the back but not the front. Over time I liked it more and more. Now I like the whole thing.

Also I used to like how the standard F430 look better than the Scud and 16M. But now I like the hot versions more.

Time to go jump into a standard one now. My dad is on vacation and left me his spider :)

Did you get any new rides?

I’m still DD’ing the 997.

Funny how no matter how many cars I’ve bought or test driven since getting it I keep going back to the trusty old Carrera. I don’t like the 991.1 as much as the 997.2. Haven’t driven a turbo charged 991.2 C2 or C2S yet.

My buddy has a manual 997.1 Turbo and is thinking of getting a 997 GT3 too. He’s going GT3 crazy right now.

I got my beater truck! ‘99 Super Duty 7.3! Got a great deal and it runs excellent.

997 hunting will begin after I sell back the TDI to VW.

09/19/2016 at 19:18

Kinja'd!!!0

7.3! Is that petrol or diesel?

Nice on the 997 hunting. Which one you going to go for?

Still no issues with mine. Considering getting exhaust for it. And maybe a wrap and tinted windows to make it cooler in the summer. 997 A/C isn’t as cold as an American car or a larger German sedan or SUV.

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > Manuél Ferrari
09/19/2016 at 19:40

Kinja'd!!!0

Yep, 7.3 powerstroke turbodiesel. It’s a big loud beast of a truck and I love it. 4x4, long bed super cab. Way more truck than I need at the moment, but for the price I couldn’t look away, and I have plans down the road.

I’m not sure which 997 yet. I have not yet determined a budget. Ideally a 997.2 C4S. But the budget will probably require I stick to a 997.1 C2S/C4S or a 997.2 C2/C4.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
09/19/2016 at 19:43

Kinja'd!!!1

Nice! You can tow many cars with that beast of a truck.

You should get a RWD 997. Unless it’s a Turbo. Only then is AWD is acceptable.

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > Manuél Ferrari
09/19/2016 at 20:49

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, if not a 997T I’d prefer RWD, but it’s really gonna come down to what’s out there (that is in good condition, has a complete maintenance history and is equipped with El Manuél.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
09/19/2016 at 21:32

Kinja'd!!!0

Ohhh I just thought of something

If you get a good deal on a Manuél C4S then do the RWD conversion. It’s apparently easy. At least it was on the 996, not sure about 997.

Then you’d have a RWD 911 with a fat ass :)

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > Manuél Ferrari
09/19/2016 at 22:32

Kinja'd!!!0

So I looked into it and it is extremely difficult if not impossible… 997 ditches 996 viscous coupling in favor of an electronically controlled differential.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
09/20/2016 at 14:48

Kinja'd!!!0

Ah, very interesting. Scratc that idea then.

Well at least it’s easy to do with the 996 and the R8 if we ever buy those cars before they get too expensive.

Imagine a Manuél RWD 996 Turbo S. It would be like a more comfy GT2.

And a Manuél RWD R8 V10 would be pretty amazing too. It would be like a more comfy Gallardo LP 550-2

EXACTLY. I keep telling him that life is too short to NOT DD a 911 that you own.

There is no reason not to DD a Porsche. They’re reliable, relatively efficient, and they don’t depreciate due to mileage as bad as exotics do.

Look at how expensive even a high mileage 993 is these days. He can DD his 999T and it will still be worth a lot in the future due to manual Mezger.

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > Manuél Ferrari
09/22/2016 at 12:06

Kinja'd!!!0

I think in the long run, every 911 that’s not a base 996 C2 will appreciate.

BTW have you seen this? http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/porsch…

Pretty good guide, I think!

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
09/22/2016 at 20:36

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha maybe true. Do you think even a 996 C4S will appreciate then? It has the same IMS issue. And same crappy interior.

I’ve checked out Sharkwerks before. Cool stuff. And I was talking to a Porsche mechanic my Dad knows and getting some advice.

I wonder if I should spend money to boost the power in my 997. It would be nice to have an extra 15-30 HP. It wouldn’t be a huge bump but would probably feel noticeable.

I wonder when 991.1 cars will bottom out. A 991.1 C2S would be cool, even if just PDK, if the car didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Kinja'd!!! Saracen > Manuél Ferrari
09/22/2016 at 23:37

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, especially the late model C4S. They’re like almost the same price as the 05.5 997's.

If I get a 997 it’ll get the Sharkwerks crossover bypass pipes at the least.

I’ve seen 991's as low as $60k, but I think at that price I’d take a 997.2 C4S or a high mileage 997T.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Saracen
09/23/2016 at 00:59

Kinja'd!!!0

Wow that’s crazy how well the late model C4S held its value.

A $60K 991 would only be exciting if it’s a C2S or higher. A base model would not be as fun as a 997.2 C2S or higher. The base model 991 C2 is not that exciting. It feels slower than my base model 997.2 C2. The power comes up higher in the RPM range due to the 200 CC downsize and the different engine programming. It feels like its always being wound up.
